Many have already reviewed this CD very positively, so just a brief word. This is probably the most attractive intro. you could have to Vaughan Williams - all the works, whether well known or not so well known, are most beautiful, the recording is excellent and the performances under Boult, who knew exactly how to get the beauty and the poetry out of VW without losing sight of the structure, could not be better. You just can't go wrong - it's a glorious CD.

This CD mostly delivered what was expected of it. The only critique I have is that some of the tempos could have been cleaner, and that it should be cross-referenced by the other composers besides J. S. Bach.

I was expecting this to be true to its title"Meditation".
Though nice it's really just a random selection of music
not necessarily soft or meditative.

The product consists in a CD and a DVD. The CD is aninterpretation of the Symphony, which is quite good and the DVD is the history behind the composer (Shostakovich) who wrote the symphony. I consider the DVD much better than the CD. The orchestra director, Bernard Haitink, demonstrates clearly that he is not a Shostakovich specialist.

For those of you who like or, as I do, love Baroque music it doesn't get better than this. If you have not gotten past the three giants of Baroque---Bach, Handel and Vivaldi---it is time you discovered the magic of the most prolific of them all---Telemann. I have a great deal of Telemann's music, up until now only vocal music, many cantatas and a couple of delightful operas. Now I am into Telemann's instrumental music and have acquired quite a few CDs. I think his Tafelmusik is the best. But truly I don't think he ever wrote a bad note. Everything he wrote has a certain spirit, a joie de vivre. This set is ridiculously cheap and I heartily recommend it.

Holst The Planets was a universal awakening for progressive rock musicians during the early 70's. Mars, the bringer of War turns up on King Crimson's The Devil's Triangle. Excerpts from Jupiter, Bringer of Jollity are found on NO OPPORTUNITY NECESSARY by Yes. The main melody is reproduced on Manfred Mann's Joybringer. The center section of Mars, Bringer of War is played by Lucifer's Friend on Summerdream. I have also heard snipets of Procol Harum and Univers Zero. I believe that David Bedford and Bernard Hermann were influenced as well. Holst the Planets is very educating and musicians have been studying the work for decades. John Williams compositions for the Star Wars Trilogy is the most common example of just how influential Holst really was. A great buy!

I read several reviews before I purchased my copy of this concert. The mention of glare ruining the DVD was a bit exaggerated; too many other angle shots salvaged the show. The quality of shots could have been better, but then there's always a drawback to proper angles and exposures in hindsight, when a dry run isn't available in the concert hall to fine tune all the cameras. I found the lighting used more semi-gaudy hues than normally seen.
As for the musical titles, they were a mix of the seldom heard with an established repertoire. What's with "The Blue Danube?" This one is on all three of the Rieu concert DVDs I've purchased to date (this one, plus the concerts in Dublin, Ireland, and his "Homecoming," in Maastrecht, Holland). Besides at least one waltz classic, Rieu adds songs that ... Read More
