I must say that I didn't know what to expect from this CD when I first bought it. Sometimes classical piano music can become tedious and put me to sleep (which of course isn't all that bad). However, I really like the painist - Mitsuko Uchida, and I was interested in getting an album focused on Schubert, since he is known as one of the best classical composers. Well, I must say that I wasn't disappointed. This is an excellent album and Mitsuko Uchida plays these piano pieces so well. I especially like Schubert's final two piano sonatas (959 and 960). It seems that Schuberts sadness and anger comes through in them, and of course, at this time, he was closed to dying. These two sonatas, in and of themselves, are worth the buy. All in all, this is an excellent collection of beautiful ... Read More

The first classical music I ever heard was by Beethoven and the Piano Concerto No. 5 in particular. It showed me that classical music so couched in cobwebs could be hard-core and uncompromising.

After school, I tried to track down that recording but found the swamp of different versions a little hard to handle. After about four different versions, I finally found the one that I deem as perfect.

After many years, I thought I would take the plunge and buy this new version by Hélène Grimaud. It seems that all modern classical albums have a sexy bird on the front cover and I keep asking, are the best all so beautiful?

Not so in this case. I found this performance rather uninspiring and the finger work unsubtle, when compared to my favourite pianists.

I always had a recording of the moonlight Sonata, I felt the best: Arthur Rubinstein!

Meanwhile, excited about the record that Pollini made of the last Beethoven's sonatas, I decided to buy this CD out of curiosity.

What a surprise! Rubinstein now has a competitor's time!

And what about the Pastoral Sonata? I have heard this beautiful music with Gilels, Annie Fischer, Sokolov, Brendel, Richter, Kempff. But this recording of Pollini is, without doubt, the best!

Chopin Piano Sonata No.3 in B minor, Op.58 - III. Largo is one of my all time favorites and this recording is the best I've heard (something I discovered a few days ago thru NPR accidentally). It's much slower (and more space) than any other recordings I know of but truly intimate and spoke direct to my heart. The slow massaging of each of those lustrous notes Chopin wrote (you know the passage I'm referring to) gave me the goose bumps every single time! The beauty it resonated is almost too much and too full for the heart to take and brought me to verge of tears.

This is clearly the gold standard for late Beethoven performances. I saw Pollini play these pieces at Carnegie Hall in the late '70's and was absolutely overwhelmed. After just having spent some considerable time with Papa Serkin's final effort on Opp. 109-111, gotta say, 'tain't but the One: and that One is Pollini. For my money, it's a nearly perfect CD.

Gyorgy Sandor, whom I remember seeing in the halls of the University of Michigan School of music many years back, does an amazing job at recording all the Bartok piano pieces. It's really incredible when an artist is able to achieve this kind of scope and do this much work. Of course, having a good teaching job at Michigan and other places and his renown helped a lot, I am sure. In any case, I expected a couple of CDs in this box, but not FIVE of them! Bartok also, obviously, had the highest of aspirations. It's hard to get a grip on this, since each is over 70 minutes long so we're talking about 6 hours of music here. I've been purchasing almost all the sheet music as well to go with these. No better way to study the great composer.

A wonderful CD collection indeed! I have bought all of the Brilliant Classics Complete Collections and have not been upset with any set. The only thing I didn't like about this set (and only because I can compare with my others), the information was on the outside instead of the inside. Meaning that all of the works were located on the outside box instead of on the flap like Mozart, Beethoven and Bach.

The set is much more colorful than the last couple also. You can see how much time they spend on making it look "brilliant". Definitely a wonderful deal for the price... and you should not even give it a second thought.

This CD is a sort of mish-mash of a bunch of seemingly random songs. She goes all over the map from Bach to Braveheart to Linkin Park to Beethoven to Gladiator to Bedingfield and beyond. It's sort of like how I have a bunch of random songs locked in my brain that come out on the keyboard - this album makes me think that I could just take all these songs I know and make an album out of them and hope people understand or care about their significance to me.

I would've given this album 3 stars because 3 tracks will appeal to movie score addicts, 2 tracks will appeal to pop fans and 3 tracks will likely insult classical purists, ETC. I gave it 4 though because even though there are some tracks I will skip on a regular basis, the ones that DO appeal to me are really a pleasure to listen to.

This set contains what must be some of the finest Beethoven recordings ever made. The Tempest and the Waldstein are great performances. The Waldstein, in fact, is the best I've ever heard, even better than Horowitz's. A number of pianists excell in the work's big moments, but Brendel integrates them with the more lyrical passages in a way that is totally unique. The Appassionata is a good performance, also displaying a big technique. I still prefer Rudolf Serkin in this work, but Brendel is very much worth listening to. Les Adieux goes very well indeed. One of the little treasures in this set is Sonata No. 19, which Brendel plays with an integrity of interpretation that one rarely hears in Beethoven's shorter piano works. The sound engineering throughout the set is quite good and never less than engaging, even though ... Read More
