We bought this to use in the church nursery. It is entertaining and yet calming to listen to. Short review, but definitely worth the $4!

Andras Schiff is releasing a complete cycle of the Beethoven 32 piano sontats. This is Volume 4, featuring three of his better-known symphonies (The Op 26 "Funeral March", the Op 27 No 2 "Moonlight, and the Op 28 "Pastoral"). The sonata which steals the thunder is the Op 27 No 1 (the first of the sonatas "quasi una Fantasia").

All four sonatas are impeccably played. Schiff uses a minimum of damper pedal. He also picks up the tempo of the famous "Moonlight" first movement, while sustaining the damper pedal (at half-pedal, I think) for what seems to be the entire movement. It's a stunning effect.

I might also recommend the Schiff lectures on the 32 sonatas - check out the Guardian UK website - [...] - who generously posted the 32 lectures (delivered over two years at Wigmore ... Read More

I started playing this CD before my baby was born. I play it on car rides and at bed time. He likes it alot. I think it has enhanced his recognition of music and instruments over time. He recognize some of the songs when he watches "Little Einsteins".

Excellent selection of (crossover) classical music. I did not realize how much classical music I knew until I listened to this.

Andras Schiff's rendition of this whole series of 32 Sonata's is breathtaking. His skill, interpretation and dedication to these pieces is remarkable. Made so much more enjoyable by his lecture series on all the Beethoven Piano Sonatas available on the Guardian Unlimited website which makes this volume all that more accessible and enjoyable

My title applies primarily to the 1965 black & white film of Alexis Weissenberg playing Stravinsky's Three Movements from Petrushka, amazingly creatively filmed in Stockholm by Åke Falck. I remember seeing this film on TV almost forty years ago and the memory of it has stayed with me ever since. I am so pleased finally to have a copy of that marvelous film. Weissenberg was in his early thirties at the time and at the very height of his considerable form. The views provided by Falck are highly unusual but each has a clear intention of adding to our enjoyment of the music by showing us in closeup both the hands of Weissenberg and the movements of the mechanism of the piano; the camera actually almost climbs inside the piano. The whole thing is filmed with high-key contrast. This is one of the great piano films ... Read More

If you're looking for perfection, keep looking. Technically shoddy to the point of distraction. However, for $3/CD, it will make a good gift for your mother-in-law.
