The new CD by Paul O' Dette,
preminent american lutenist,
is dedicated to the music
by the mid-century German
lutenist Hans Neusidler.

A composer well known
by lute players, but
virtually unknown by
the general public of
classic music enthusiasts.

In fact, to the best of
my knowledge, this is
the first disc wholly
deidcated to this
composer

The choice of composer'
pieces seems to reflect
the obvious influence of
early italian Renaissance
lute music, and French
chansons: we see a number
of Fantasias, intabulations
of madrigals and French chansons,
with some dance movement.

Honour to Paul for the
composer choice, and ... Read More

King's Singers Greatest Hits was disappointing. The contemporary music included did not have the smooth feel that one expects, and the classical pieces were all right but not spectacular. I did not feel that some of these pieces were greatest hits. I will probably go back to listening to older collections of their music.

After attending an excellent live concert, we ordered this CD for home use, particularly while doing indoor exercise routines. Many of the selections are not new and include performances with the family patriarch. That is part of this recording's value and charm! It has a wide variety of works with differing tempos and intensities, but they all have technical excellence and communicate the spirit behind the music. There is an undeniable excitement to their music, and it evokes the feelings and images of Old Spain. If you dabble at classical guitar, you will appreciate the almost endless talent of this family, but also suffer if you compare your own talent to theirs! Of course listening to the composer of MalagueƱa perform his own work is priceless!

I own one other version of the timeless Pope Marcellus mass (choir of westminster abbey) and have heard many other recordings of it but upon sampling the many different recordings available online this particular selection drew me in like no other.

Other reviewers have already given the history of Giovanni and the lack of authenticity displayed by Philips and the Tallis Scholars but nearly everyone agrees that this recording is not "just another" flawless recording but one sung angelically, worthy of the heavens. I've never heard a richer sound from any choral group performing Renaissance music, and only Stephen Layton's Polyphony has what I consider a richer sound.

Besides the ultrafamous Marcellus Mass, this CD contains three others: the Assumpta Est Maria and ... Read More

Imagine a pastry chef of a future age who sees a perfect color picture of an historical artifact known as a "hamburger." Using this image, he perfectly recreates it using the tool of his trade, the primary ingredients being meringue for the bun and mousse for the burger. The result is absolutely delicious - in fact, a superlative dessert.

Sometime later, a legitimate hamburger recipe is discovered. The pastry chef is roundly derided for his "recreation," an historically inaccurate artifact. He is disgraced.

But happy. As are the many millions who continue to enjoy his concoction.

For genuine hamburger, look elsewhere - this is not Gabrieli as heard in St. Marks' during the Renaissance. But for one of the most spectacular musical "desserts" you will ever enjoy, click the "buy" ... Read More

I believe this Deutsche Harmonia Mundi 50th set is BETTER than the Harmonia Mundi France edition.

Why you ask? First of all, I think it is safe to say that over the years, Harmonia Mundi has always been far more valuable as a label for its recordings of music pre-1650. This Deutsche set reflects that. The HM France set is more of a chronological catalogue of all "classical" music.

Secondly (and completely subjectively), I prefer Baroque and Early Music, which this set is chock full of. Honestly, I haven't even really listen to much of the HM France edition which is weighed down by (in my opinion) too many unnecessary and boring recordings by the likes of Janacek, De Falla, Schumann, Chausson, Copland, et al.

Don't get me wrong, it is a great source for reference, but the Deutsche ... Read More

I purchased this recording as a reference recording for my trumpet studio. As I started to listen to it, I realized that it contains some of the absolute greatest classical trumpet recordings there are. Rafael Mendez is mind-blowing, Bud Herseth's rendition of the Haydn Concerto is stunningly flawless and Abblasen is a great way to open this 2-CD set. It contains a sample of almost all the great symphonic trumpeters of the last 50 years. A "must have" doesn't even begin to justify how great this set is ... and at Amazon's price, don't even hesitate. Just click BUY and enjoy. This is one purchase that any trumpet lover will never regret.
