When this Richard Jones staging of Hansel and Gretel first appeared it took a little getting used to. After all, missing was the mysterious forest, the enticing gingerbread house and the fourteen angels that watch over our vulnerable protagonists.
What replaces these conventions are weird and mysterious images that hew true to the story's sweet sense of adventure yet still remain beautiful within their own aesthetic.
The casting for this production was cleverly effected. Did the Met intentionally cast singers in the adult roles who are all over six feet tall? Whether intended or not, this serves the story well as all the singers inhabit their roles with assurance and a real sense of character.
Christine Schafer and Alice Coote used the long rehearsal period that a new production ... Read More

The centerpiece of this CD is a recital of selections from Handel's opera Hercules. The late Lorraine Hunt Lieberson sings Dejanira's recitatives and arias, following a path from passion and jealousy into madness. This program is bookended by two alto arias from Bach cantatas. While the Bach solos are musically more to my liking, the Handel material does well to showcase the mezzo-soprano's talent. For me there are three highlights to this disc.

- Track 1: "Kommt ihr angefochten Sünder" from cantata BWV 30. This is an ideal first song of the day as you start your car. The measured pulse of the music gently helps you wake up and takes the edge off the morning commute. Whether a trick of the composition, the performance, or the recording (or all three), the first note sounds like a pickup, ... Read More

I saw this production on TV many years ago and thought then that it was really good, I have now changed my mind, it is brilliant, although Teresa Stratas probably could not have sung the role on stage she excels here, her acting, dancing and singing is superb, is there any end to this womans talent? the rest of the cast is so well made that this is a masterpiece, the great Astrid Varnay is well cast here, vocally she is well past her prime but her experience in opera makes her the ideal Herodias. I have a number of performances with Stratas including Nedda and Violetta in La Traviata and she never puts a foot wrong no matter what she is doing. If you want Salome this has to be the only way to go. Brilliant, tense, sexy and overall frightening performance from Teresa Stratas, that is exactly what Salome should be. ... Read More

I've just received this highly vaulted recital album, which is more-or-less my introduction to Kaufmann and his voice. My first thought was that the voice is as baritonal as they say -- like listening to Robert Merrill try tenor roles, though Kaufmann is fully comfortable in the range. I found this particularly distracting in the Traviata excerpt, when I couldn't stop wondering why Germont is singing his son's lines. Some tenors (Del Monoco?) do also come to mind, but rarely his (and my) idol Fritz Wunderlich; the sound is often cloudy and unclear, and rarely strings out cleanly and prettily (a notable fault in the Bizet aria, a bit better in Faust); it seems most open in the Wagner excerpt (and does sound a bit like Wunderlich there). In some cases like the concluding Werther, the sound and delivery are similar enough ... Read More

I used to have the DVD of Decca version of La Traviata featuring Angela Gheorghiu. I liked it but this blu-ray provides a whole new experience with its great high definition vision and audio. Ms. Gheorghiu, as Violetta, performs amazingly in both singing and acting. It's great to observe all the details of the singer's facial expressions and gestures in hi-def. Mr. Vargas, as Alfredo, performs very well even though his acting is rather clumsy. The baritone, as the father, sings flawlessly. I thought the production was also excellent. I expected more from the Gypsy's dance/song but all in all this title deserves five stars.

This blu-ray is my very first opera title and I'm more falling in love with blu-ray after watching this Verdi's masterpiece. I know I'll be watching it over and over again especially the first act.

This 4th CD is a perfect addition to the set, especially tracks 4 (Give me a midnight snack, to the tune of Bizet's "Habanero") and 12 (Beep beep beep--which gives a whole new perspective of "Moonlight Sonata"). For classical music lovers, it's really great and for those new to classical musical or who've never before thought of it as "music", the lyrics are hilarious and catchy, and help the listener think perhaps those "ancient composers" actually knew what they were doing.

The rare moments of solace I find these days are usually in the company of Segovia, but considering that so much has been said about this guy in the last sixty years, it's hard to add anything else without sounding superfluous.
