We bought this to use in the church nursery. It is entertaining and yet calming to listen to. Short review, but definitely worth the $4!

The centerpiece of this CD is a recital of selections from Handel's opera Hercules. The late Lorraine Hunt Lieberson sings Dejanira's recitatives and arias, following a path from passion and jealousy into madness. This program is bookended by two alto arias from Bach cantatas. While the Bach solos are musically more to my liking, the Handel material does well to showcase the mezzo-soprano's talent. For me there are three highlights to this disc. - Track 1: "Kommt ihr angefochten Sünder" from cantata BWV 30. This is an ideal first song of the day as you start your car. The measured pulse of the music gently helps you wake up and takes the edge off the morning commute. There's not really a lot to say about a package containing all post-Rienzi operas from Bayreuth at less than $2/disc. I can't seriously imagine anyone being disappointed by this set: cast after cast of superb singers, conductors -- all bathed in that glorious Bayreuth sound. Some might argue over one performance vs. others, but there are no disappointments here. Decca deserves congratulations for making this available.

Libera continues to put out great music. Though the music is basically the same type of music as their other CD's. This CD has a slightly different feel to it in my opinion. Their music is part ethereal and part just plain fun. They sound like they enjoy singing together and being part of Libera. It would be great to be able to see them live in concert to see that joy and enthusiasm that they put into their singing on the CD's. Anyone who is a fan of boy treble singers and boy's choirs should buy this CD.

I must admit at the onset that I had no intention of seeing, let alone buying this set, but the local PBS station KCET broadcast it and since I was not planning an outing I stayed in and watched it. I should say at the outset I have only seen this opera twice on stage, with San Francisco,1955 (Borkh and Weede--an under used and utilized singer) and in Vienna in 1972 with Christa LUdwig and Kostas Paskalis, one of the great evenings at the opera).Of course I owned the Verret performance and had heard the EMI edition of Callas. It is best to draw a veil over the Suliotus and the second Verret recordings. A friend lent me a VHS of the Glyndebourne performance with Paskalis and Barstow. So many times when a person buys a CD there are only a couple of songs that they consider good. On this CD there are over half the songs that are more than good. They are great. This CD has all the Sarah's greatest hits and more. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who loves Sarah Brightman.
