Horrible, horrible recording. Yo Yo Ma, as usual, gives a great performance. The sound engineer, Richard King, should be run out of his profession. The recording is muddled, piano and other instruments are too loud, and even the sound of the cello is occasionally distorted. You can hear Ma breathing and other distracting sounds during the course of certain songs.

To my great surprise, in the last two decades of his life Solti turned into a marvelous Mozart interpreter. His '80's Figaro, and '90's Magic Flute and Cosi fan Tutte are among my favorite versions, Sir Georg's sometimes abrasive nervous energy (and scholarly use of reduced orchestral forces) makes for fantastically dramatic, anti-romantic readings. This requiem, recorded on the 200th anniversary of Mozart's death in St Stephen's cathedral in Vienna benefits from an awesome reverberant acoustic, a quartet of fabluous operatic singers (and let's face it, this is an opera manque, religiose, not religious, "the sickly sweets of operatic sin" as Stravinsky called it, and a good thing too I say). Excerpts of the actual Mass ceremony are interspersed, and along with the opening tolling of the bells, ... Read More

This CD is great for Christmas dinner. I discovered that laat year (2007) when I borrowed a copy of it from my library and brought it to my girlfriend's house, where she, her extended family, and I had a Christmas get-together.

It's not jarring or loud, and ideal background music for a Christmas feast.

I haven't been enthusiastic about this ensemble of women singers, Trio Mediaeval, on their previous CDs, singing potpourris of chant and polyphony. Their voices are more individually interesting than those of the better-known Anonymous Four, but they've 'schmalzed' up the reverb and used other little gimmicks to trick themselves out as 'spiritual-sounding.' On this CD, however, they've tapped into their Norwegian roots, utilized the special vocal quality of Norwegian women singers, caught all the trollish mystery of ancient runes and isolated fiords. We Swedes depend on our Samii and Finnish singers for equally "weird" and heathenish vocal effects, but we can't match the Norwegians. I've never heard this music before except when kayaking farm to farm on one of the northernmost fiords. Trio Mediaeval ... Read More

Music, performance, production, sound, innovation.

This re-defines contemporary music and modern choral performance.

Judging by this disc, 'Conspirare' is the finest choir working today and O'Regan the most individual composing voice.

It's a perfect match. This is GRAMMY material - don't wait for the awards though!

This recording is not what it says it is. I put it in my computer CD player and the information on my monitor listed the performers as conductor Kent Nagano, tenor Jerry Hadley and others. I listened to the recording and the voice is clearly a tenor. Alan Titus is a baritone and Bernstein wrote the piece for a baritone. How can this be possible? I gave it one star but it deserves no stars.

"Choosing the works for this album was a delightful journey, a wonderful excuse to immerse myself in the rich treasury of music written for the voice....I hope many listeners will appreciate this tribute to the voice and get a kick out of hearing my take on these timeless classics." ~ Joshua Bell ~

At the Opening Night for Concert Season at Hollywood Bowl a few years back, Joshua Bell was one of the featured guests where he performed a piece from the soundtrack of Ladies in Lavender where he is the featured violinist, and another performance where he shared the spotlight with Josh Groban. I was in awe and it was great seeing them perform before a live audience. My first exposure to Mr. Bell's artistry is his Grammy-nominated tribute album in honor of the timeless music of George Gershwin, Gershwin ... Read More

As an avid fan of the Irish Tenors I thoroughly enjoyed this CD until the last three songs. While I appreciate the Irish Tenors showing their respect for this country and their American fans by recording "God Bless America" etc., I fail to understand what such songs are doing on a Christmas CD. I am especially surprised by the inclusion of "Battle Hymn of the Republic." This song was a marching melody for the Union Army during the civil war and I think it shows a naive misunderstanding of history to include that track on this CD. What has Christmas to do with the Civil War? The tenors need to realize they don't have to include American songs in order to sell to American citizens. Stop catering.
