Britten: Billy Budd This recording was originally made in 1966 on the BBC. It has been carefully reconstituted in B&W and mono. Color and stereo would be nice, but the overall quality is such that their absence is not important. Personally I believe the B&W format improves the darkness of the opera. I highly recommend.

This new version `La Boheme' is a risky investment. There are numerous top-notch recordings from first rate performers that the ante for the benchmark is really hard to surmount.
And in reality this recording does not succeed in surpassing some of its eminent predecessors. Rolando Villazon made a gallant effort in present Rodolfo, and his portrayal really is at par with other lyrical tenors in the class of Giuseppe di Stefano, but for the down-scaled aria in Act I. Even so, Villazon really stole the show in this CD recording with his poetic and passionate approach.
Others fare less well. There were high hopes for Anna Netrebko's Mimi, perhaps the only Puccini role that suits her lyrical soprano. While her singing did not disappoint in the basic aspects, for the more refined listeners ... Read More

Hearing items from this recording on radio recently, it was clear that Godowsky's imaginative approach to transcription and his virtuosic pianistic skills were equally matched by Marc-Andre Hamelin's artistry. Indeed, while I have heard some of these pieces dismissed by others as mere 'salon music', under Hamelin's care they emerged as works of substantial merit, as appropriate to the concert platform as any major work. And what often sounds like a physical struggle in the hands of some pianists, emerged here as part of Hamelin's bread and butter diet. Not a negative comment about his playing skills, I hasten to say; but an indication that he makes it possible for the listener to move beyond the momentary illusion of finger fireworks and enjoy the mood and imagery evoked by Godowsky's creative flair. Four many people, the common belief about bagpipe music is that the repertoire of bagpipers was somewhat limited to a few well known tunes, particularly "Amazing Grace," "Highland Cathedral," and of course "Scotland the Brave." It's also believed that bagpipe music is best in moderation, and appropriate for a parade and a great touch for a funeral. If you have the same preconceived notions about bagpipes, SPIRIT OF THE GLEN will quickly change your mind.

The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards are joined by a variety of other musicians and present a pleasing collection of music. The collection contains standards such as "Amazing Grace" and "Highland Cathedral," as are other Celtic favorites, but the collection also includes arrangements of film scores and some popular contemporary Celtic songs as well. ... Beethoven Lives Upstairs is a delightful way to introduce Beethoven's work to young and older students. Be careful telling young students about his deafness. One six year old dissolved in tears and couldn't play Beethoven for another year!

I bought this because I love to listen to cellos. On my Mark&Daniels, the sound is first rate, overall. ButI would have loved to have the cello given a bit more prominence, audio-wise. The accompanying instruments are aggressive enough to drown the cello out in the musical pictures, except for the first selection which is just fabulous.

I often have "Soundscapes" on during the day, but do not leave on the TV monitor, as I cannot always see it. However, when I do hear a song that grabs my attention, I will walk over and turn on the monitor to see the name and the artist of the song. Many times over the last months, I would see that the song was by Ludovico Einaudi, so many times, in fact, that I eventually bought this album. What a great decision that was! I own hundreds of New Age or instrumental CDs by great artists, but this is superlative music. There are no weak or throw-away cuts here, just powerful, emotional sounds that will grab your heart and not let go. For the first week, I never listened to anything else, and now I listen every night before bed, have it on my iPod for my car. Einaudi is a masterful musical talent; you will not be disappointed ... Mozart's piano sonatas are like listening to ice cream. They are just music. And I mean this in the most positive sense. Mozart's good artistic taste manifests itself in being profoundly unpretentious and self-effacing. As Raymond Chandler said, "There is no great and important art; there is only art... and precious little of that."
Mozart's music is inconsequential as music so rarely is. It asks very little of the listener and provides so much. It is for this reason that it is perfect background or atmospheric music. It GOES with things in the way that Schubert (e.g.) does not. I recommend eating vanilla ice cream while listening to Mozart piano sonatas. This will afford you an experience of synesthesia that blows the mind.
