31.Mozart: Symphonies 40 & 41 / Bernstein from: Deutsche Grammophon

Classical Music : Mozart: Symphonies 40 & 41 / Bernstein

Mozart's last two symphonies are interesting in that they reach a level of intensity not usually associated with the majority of his other works. I guess people love Mozart for his emotional health, cleaness, mathematical precision and utter grace. The last two symphonies of Mozart, can be seen as a meeting place of Mozart and Beethoven where Mozart's purity of form meets the angry Beethoven's sense of struggle.

It is surprising that conductor Bernstein does such a fine job with the task of providing balance to these works. After all, Bernstein wasn't known for restraint, and he certainly was never considered a great conductor of Mozart.

Comparisons: Bruno Walter; Toscanini

Just to point out an inaccuracy in the previous review, symphonies 26 and 32 are complete. These works are in the form of one movement consisting of sections in place of the usual separate movements divided up with one movement to a track. Understandable error - I wondered about this myself when I first saw the recording.

Anyway, these are fine performances of these works. Marriner's crisp yet elegant Mozart is excellent. My only reason for giving four rather than five stars is that to me the sound is a little bit on the strident side. I would have preferred more ambience, depth and transparency to the sound - but it's not that bad -still a very recommendable recording.

Excellent product..one of the standard anthologies available for studying Music History.

One caveat, if you're using Hanning's Concise Grout as a companion text, be sure to match the correct edition of the anthology + recordings to the correct edition of the text.

As mentioned this is a great collection for anyone who wants to introduce themselves to the classical genre. I purchased this collection for the sheer amount of Mozart available, but I would say there is one flaw.

It mentions the Film Name on the track, instead of the Original name of the compositions. Although I can understand this is the connection between the CD and customer, however I would have also liked the real composition names, so next time I'm drunk on wine with friends I can drop the M-Bomb (Mozart).

Despite that I'm still giving it 5 stars, as the product more than makes up for it!

On these DVDs are the finest performances of Mozart symphonies I have ever seen or heard. I once lived in Vienna and saw Bohm conduct. I was impressed with him then, but not as much as I am now. Karl Bohm is, without question, my favorite conductor of the 20th Century. I used to be a Toscanini fan, but now, I cannot listen to his work at all, after hearing Bohm. I also own the Schubert, Brahms and Beethoven symphonies, all of which are equally good. A very great musician, Karl Bohm, and a superb conductor.

MOZART ADAGIOS (Serene Music) 5-STARS

This more-than-generous collection of Mozart Adagios Double CD set clocks in at just a shade under two and a half hours. All the favorites are here, the B-flat Serenade for Winds, the 'Elvira Madigan' Piano Concerto, the Concerto for Flute and Harp and much more, but the ever-present question is who's playing, and the answers should give satisfaction.

The star of this cd is Vladimir Ashkenazy, whose excellent piano concerto recordings with the Philharmonia Orchestra are represented with four selections, while Andr s Schiff is heard in the three solo sonata movements. Other notable soloists include violinist Joshua Bell, clarinetists Jack Brymer and Gervaise de Peyer and horn player Barry Tuckwell, accompanied by the likes of the English ... Read More

This 3 CD collection is perfect for those long Sunday drives. If you are a Mozart fan you will not be disappointed. The style of the conductor is subtle, without too much vibrato, which makes the music sound timeless compared to mid-century recordings.
