This early Naxos CD would be a find at any price. Barry Wordsworth conducts the Capella Istropolitana in Mozart's symphonies 34, 35, and 39. The Mozart playing is near ideal as the performance brings out the lyricism and power in the scores and the beautiful writing for winds, brass and tympani. Both Wordsworth and the ensemble have continued with notable careers after this early recording. Wordsworth is currently the Conductor Laureate of the BBC Concert Orchestra in 2006 after serving as principal conductor since 1989. The Capella Istroplitana began as a studio orchestra and has recorded extensively for Naxos. It has also expanded beyond the recording studio and now performs exensively in Bratislava and elsewhere. I share the enthusiasm of my fellow Amazon reviewers for this CD.

Classical Music : George Szell: Decca & Philips Recordings 1951-1969
I just don't get the whole Szell bashing thing that goes on all too frequently by certain highbrow professional reviewers. Just listen to his Slavonic Dances by Dvorak and try to tell me they leave you cold. No way. The same can be said of any of these singing performances. This is one of my favorite Beethoven 5ths along with Furtwangler's 1943 BPO and Erich Kleiber's legendary one (also with the Concertgebouw). The Dvorak 8th (among the best with Ancerl, Talich and his own with the CO), Tchaikovsky 4th, Mozart 34th, and all of the overtures and incidental music are equally impressive. I do, however, prefer his Cleveland recordings of the Brahms and Sibelius, although there is plenty in these to appreciate. The remastered sound is very good throughout.

Classical Music : The Most Beautiful Melodies of Classical Music, Vol. 1-10 (Box Set)
Some of the first music I purchased years ago at Costco, taking a gamble on the quality of pieces chosen, orchestrations, etc..
This remains among some of my favorite collections, as the music is beautiful, rich, and well-done. I ended up buying it about 8 yrs later for my sister b/c she loved it so much.

First off, I am guessing you are considering this record because it is done by Gidon Kremer. If not, please understand that he is a gifted nut job. He is not the place to go for a canonical interpretation. And Mozart would applaud this judgement and Kremer's course. Mozart loved fun, not reverence and protocol. He did opera for the masses.

I called Kremer a nut job, but in a serious way. He does not fool with the music. The performances are tight, disciplined presentations. But he does have his own way. Not technically, mind you, as we see some performers do. Rather it is a context of presentation where faithful joins fun.

Back to the rest of you Kremerata fans. Getting past the opening tintinabulation and more, rather than kleine, nachtmusik, you get to some quite interesting Schnittke. ... Read More

This is C.P.E Bach at his finest. It's both haunting and soothing, relaxing but with dramatic outbursts, and completely original. I've heard C.P.E.'s music described as "manic-depressive"--this would certainly be it! The music lingers in my head for hours if not days.

This cd is great because unlike other classical music cds made for babies, this one even adults can enjoy. Sometimes they change the song so that it sounds more like something a baby will appeal too, but this one just keeps the original song format which means even people without babies would be able to enjoy some of Mozart's classics.
