Harold Bloom says reading is a private experience. That may be true when it comes to Arvo Pärt's music. For some, Arvo Pärt's "Te Deum" will be comforting, if perhaps haunting, background music on a Sunday morning while reflecting or a Friday evening while relaxing. But for a most mystical experience nothing can surpass the effect of listening to "Te Deum" while walking along the River Nidd on a pitch black moonless Yorkshire night, and ending the evening in a small church, listening once more to Arvo Pärt's "Te Deum."

I told someone tonight that this is "music to commit suicide by." What I meant is that if dying were this beautiful, everyone who heard this music would be rushing toward an oncoming train. If I did nothing else important in my life, I turned a few people on to Arvo Part's 'Kanon Pokajanen,' people who never would have found it without me. That's a pretty heavy thing to say, but I've considered it and have decided that yes, I really feel that way.

No matter what your religion, and even if you are an atheist, it doesn't matter. I sometimes consider myself an atheist. But please, if you are curious enough about this CD to have read this far, buy it.

I was a singer in a rock band in my youth. I had had no exposure to "classical" or "serious" music as a child, and only ... Read More

One is never sure what to expect when listening to contemporary music. I am into contemporary art music of all types (Ligeti, Nono, Schoenberg, etc.). I saw that Pärt was popular (this cd was displayed in stores that I go to), so I decided to get a hold of this cd. I wasn't sure if it was going to be minimalist, like Reich or Glass, or more avant garde like Nono or Penderecki.

To be sure, if one needed to categorize it, this cd would fall into the more minimalist style. After all, the cd consists of one track for an hour and ten minutes, and for the most part, it all sounds the same. However, it develops in a way that although seems the same (same sort of tonic range, for example), it is done in a manner that keeps your attention by not playing short loops like Glass or Reich (which ... This ECM disc is an important document of the work of Estonian composer Arvo Part, containing as it does a number of important early pieces from the composer's "tintinnabuli" phase. If the earlier TABULA RASA on the same label is the traditional entry point into this style, ARBOS is where one should head next. And as with all ECM discs, the performers are Part's hand-picked men, giving a definitive sheen to the recordings.

Those who have heard the TABULA RASA disc are familiar with "Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten" for bell and strings. That's a mensuration canon, where various instrumental parts play a descending scale in different speeds, but it is peaceful and contemplative. On this disc "Arbos" for 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, and percussion (1977) takes the same form, but with very different ... Read More

This is the CD I would choose to introduce the music of Arvo Part to a new listener. Why? Because it's beautful music, beautifully sung. Because it's sublimely emotional music, sublimely felt. Because it's modern music that sounds strangely familiar; if you've appreciated Gregorian or Orthodox chant, you'll recognize both the indebtedness and the orginality of Part's music. Because most of the texts are in English or in familiar liturgical Latin; an English text does offer something by way of immediacy.

Arvo Part began his musical career writing successfully in the more or less standard musical vocabulary of modernism. But then, out of dissatisfaction, he turned to the music of the Middle Ages - chant and polyphonic tropes of chant - for new inspiration. There's a lot that's direct Medievalism in this ... Classical Music : Tabula Rasa
I think this recording is one of the best available introductions to Pärt's work. All the pieces are instrumental and are probably more approachable than his immense choral works. The recording centers around "Tabula Rasa", a double-violin concerto, and also includes two of the apparently many versions of "Fratres" and the "Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten". The latter, though a moving tribute and a very interesting tour de force, is of minor significance compared to either "Tabula Rasa" or "Fratres". All the performances, though, are superlative.

"Tabula Rasa" achieves the difficult task of keeping us focused on one or two tiny ideas within a large-scale "minimalist" framework. (Most of the "minimal" composers detest the term so I only use it for convenience.) Musically and emotionally ... Read More

Classical Music : Passio
he Estonian composer Arvo Part has composed in several styles during his 40-year career, but the most popular is his "tintinnabuli" style of the 1970s and 1980s, when he chose to turn away from the avant-garde towards the simpler, bell-like sonorities of medieval Western music and plainsong. Because of the frugal nature of the music, as well as the religious titles of many of his works of this time, this style has been called by some "holy minimalism". One of his most ambitious works of this era is his PASSIO or, to use its full title, "Passio Domini Nostri Jesu Christi secundum Joannem".

The PASSIO is a straightforward setting of the Latin (Vulgate) text of St John's Gospel. However, those expecting to hear a St John's Passion classical like Bach's or fresh and modern like Sofia Gubaidulina's will be surprised. ... Read More
