I respectfully agree yet disagree with Ms Barbara Eisner who wrote the review of the 3 Tenors 1990 concert. She is right that Carreras was not on par with the other 2 but that is only because at this late stage in his (Carreras) career he was not in the very fine voice he once was due to overuse of his voice and his battle with leukemia, which he valiantly won!. If you could appreciate, as I do,Carreras' 1970's richly-gorgeous and velvety voice in recordings of operas such as Lucia, La Boheme, Donizetti and liter Verdi operas you would have seen his mid 70's peak voice would have been every been as excellent as Domingo and Pavarotti were in the 3 Tenors 1990 concert. In fact, I dare to say he would have blown both men out of the water..with the possible exception of Pavarotti singing Nessun ... Read More

Stated simply, this is the grandest cycle of Beethoven symphonies available.Don't let other reviewers make you think that the sound is terrible. It is not.I am very picky about what I listen to,and the minor imperfections in this set cannot come close to comparing with the positive aspects. This set has (in my opinion the best version of the 1st and 8th I have ever heard).I hope all that purchase this set get one tenth of the enjoyment out of it that I have.

I enjoyed this CD because I like the tenors on it very much, and it included a number of selections where the three men are singing together, or cooperatively and that was the best part.

Bryn Terfel, one of the best baritones in the world, has produced a great recording for the listening public. We can always expect him to offer rich tone, articulate phrasing, and dynamic, intelligent interpretations in his recitals, and that's exactly what we get here. Terfel once said "Having been born Welsh does not necessarily mean being the son of a good home, but it does mean having singing in the fibers of your heart." Well, Terfel certainly does anyway, and he pays tribute to his beloved homeland Wales with a lineup of Welsh folk songs. The Welsh National Anthem, of which there are two versions on this CD, is at least as rousing as "The Star-Spangled Banner" (blasphemy, I know), and is worth listening to over and over. To boot, it's sung in Welsh Gaelic, a beautiful language. Another highlight ... Read More

The Takacs Quartet resides at Colorado Univ. Boulder where they regularly play to sold-out audiences. I was fortunate enough to hear them once and was absolutely mezmerized by the sheer mastery of these musicians. Edward Dusinbere's lead violin especially left me transfixed by the nuance of his playing.

Such artisty is heard on this landmark recording of Beethoven's revolutionary Op. 59/74 quartets which rated a Gramophone "Gem" award along with their sister recording of the late quartets. Behold some of the finest quartet playing on disc - modern or historic. Compositions - 5 stars; Performances - 5 stars; Sound quality - 4.5 stars.

Another budget set to consider is Alban Berg Quartet on EMI which I deeply appreciate for its silky tone and highly polished ensemble. EMI's sound ... Read More

Bryn Terfel has a one-in-a-million voice. Lovely singing. Fine song selection. Maybe a tad too dramatic, but my real complaint centers on the excessive dynamic range between soft passages and loud. It's just too much. One moment, you're turning up the stereo to hear him sing a soft passage, the next he's blasting you out of your car or house. This happens several times per song. Volume compression could smooth out the highs and lows a bit, but purists would no doubt cry foul. In short, make sure your neighbors love Terfel as much as you do!

I provide music for water aerobics classes. The class members are typically retirees, and like Classical music, yet until this CD the only Classical music with a beat distinctive and steady enough for water aerobics that I'd found was on the "Hooked on Classics" series. Thus, for water aerobics, this is a find.

Also contributing to this CD's popularity for water aerobics are that: (1) many of the songs are upbeat, and (2) "new stereo" recordings (in contrast to my recordings of Sousa marches that were played by Sousa himself; he died in the 1930s.)

In Summary, were you to buy just ten CDs for water aerobics classes, this would be one of them.

I have nothing but agreement with those who remark about the fabulous mix of technique and artistry in these performances. The ensemble plays together organically, with great fire, tenderness, and mischief where they are required.

However, be warned that there is one major problem keeping this from being my favorite among modern recordings: in the A minor Quartet Op. 132, 1st movement, at a critical point the 1st violin plays the wrong note. This is in bar 246, beat two, where 1st is supposed to play a high G natural; instead he stays on E. It may sound like an odd complaint, but this note comes at the climax of the 1st mvt coda and probably is the linchpin of the whole piece. For the life of me, I can't figure out why they didn't rerecord the movement after that error.

Bryn Terfel sings everything beautifully. The difficulty with this CD is that some of the music is extremely tawdry.
"The Lord is My Shepherd" and "Abide With Me" are very nicely sung, although the arrangements (like almost all hymn arrangements) leave a good bit to be desired.
The big surprise was to hear him sing "Lazybones" to perfection.
But on the whole it is far better to hear him sing music whose quality matches that of his voice.
