To my uneducated ear this set is excellent. But beware, the first CD of the first set sent to me, when viewed on iTunes was totally in an oriental language. I sent the set back and the second set had the very same thing. The first CD seems to have come from a foreign edition. All other CDs were fine. The paperwork was in English.

"This project by pipa player Wu Man and the untiringly eclectic string quartet Kronos continues a collaboration that began more than a decade ago, when they recorded Ghost Opera.."(The Guardian).
Once again the Kronos, the hippest string quartet on the planet, has teamed up with its favourite composer, Terry Riley, the man who brought '60s hippieness into classical music. The original minimalists are now old men.
Riley, turned 70 in 2005 and to mark the occasion the Kronos Quartet commissioned a new work from him.
In this six-movement "mid-summer rite", there's a prominent solo role for the jangling Chinese lute, or pipa, played by the wonderful Wu Man - who also sings Chinese lullabies - against the astringent, urgent ensemble sound that Kronos applies to everything from Africa ... Read More

How wonderful to hear Herr Kempff doing Beethoven again! I don't know how many recordings he's made of the complete piano sonatas - "not enough" comes to mind. He's in no hurry and the "virtuoso" element is thankfully nowhere in sight so we're left with the music itself and it never sounded better. The earlier sonatas in particular are clear and to the point without frills or too much soul searching. The music stars here and the vehicle, Wilhelm Kempff, is completely in tune with it.
The way the line is treated is magnificent. Kempff has a narrative quality in his playing like no one else. He can spin a yarn and we're almost afraid to look away for fear of missing a key ingredient.

If this CD has made this fantastic quartet known to a larger number of people, then, it's fine. But what a desappointment in terms of music ! A few interresting songs, but i can't feel any great inspiration in this commercial CD poorly surfing on the ethnic wave. A shame.

I am befuddled by the negative reviews of this recording, just as I am befuddled by those who dismiss Glass, Reich and their peers as "Minimalists" as if their development had ended where it started. Both Reich and Glass are now mature and accomplished composers who have transformed the radical ideas of their youth into a rich and unique compositional language.

On this recording, Kronos show us just how involving and nuanced Glass's "repetitive" language can be. The Quartet #5 in particular is a masterpiece. Perhaps my favorite Glass composition. It is chock full of wonderful melodic and rhythmic ideas. Yes, the rhythmic and harmonic backdrop consists of relentless diatonic arpeggios, but the continual harmonic and dynamic modulations pull the listener along like a raft floating down a roiling river. ... The `eight seasons' referred to in this CD's name are the `Four Seasons' of Vivaldi and the `Four Seasons' of the Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla. Piazzolla is the composer most responsible for the meeting and merging of Argentine Tango and Western Classical music. From his large output, "Cuatro Estaciones Porteños," "The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires" (people from Buenos Aires are known as "Porteños"), is one of the undisputed masterworks. There are numerous recordings of these four wonderful pieces available, including one I would also highly recommend by a trio known as Opus 3 (composed of members of the Israeli Philharmonic), though I don't know if it is available in the U.S. (I purchased it in Argentina). But the recording of the Four Seasons of Buenos Aires that I think most moving is that on this CD with Gidon Kremer. If you're ... Read More

King's Singers Greatest Hits was disappointing. The contemporary music included did not have the smooth feel that one expects, and the classical pieces were all right but not spectacular. I did not feel that some of these pieces were greatest hits. I will probably go back to listening to older collections of their music.

I am no expert of beethoven's piano sonatas. I like the perfomance, even though there are others that I think I like better (Fisher, Solomon). However the sound isn't that great, it's lacking something, and I don't know what it is...I would still recommend this cd, because of the performance!

I heartily agree with the Amazon review by Stephen Wigler.

I recently listened to the famous Richter 1958 recital featuring Pictures and two Pictures renditions by Horowitz (1947 & 1951). All three of these Pictures are recommended in my what to buy next CD book. There is no DDD recording recommendation, but the book does mention my VOX 1955 Brendel LP. I have the above recordings on vinyl LPs and digital disc. Getting back to basics, a recording should preserve as close as possible the performance so that those who were there would be guessing, "is it live, or is it Memorex." None of the above even remotely does this by today's standards. I love Kissin's performance much more than any of the above and the recorded sound on it is simply dazzling.

Evgeny Kissin is another one of the great young musical virtuosos of today that go terribly over-looked. He plays with both finesse and fire, and interprets the music in a divine way. This recording of the Rach 3 is a beautiful example of Kissin's mastery of his instrument, the composer's overall style, and the work itself.

I compare this recording with that of Martha Argerich's over-rated recording of the same concerto, which I stick my tongue out at, so to speak, in the title of this review. My problem with Argerich's recording is her numerous amount of mistakes throughout the piece, as she tries to break the world record for speed. She fails at this, because it still is not as fast as Rachmaninoff played the piece, so all-in-all, her try is a lost cause (I go in to better detail on my review of that CD, which can be found on the Amazon.com page).

Kissin's ... Read More
