The CDs in this set are not packaged in standard jewelboxes nor even in cheap sleeves, but are mounted directly atop a printed surface. As a result, when I purchased the set from my school bookstore, I found that several of the CDs had dried flecks of ink on the data side that made it impossible to play or rip certain tracks. Beware.

I'm no musicologist, but perhaps this album brings up an interesting point. Consider for a moment, how quiet and intimate string instruments were from this time. The strong, operatic voices commonly employed today for this early music are more at home in large concert halls, not intimate gatherings. In most recordings of Dowland's music you can barely hear the lute because the voice is so powerful in comparison. I wonder if quieter, "pop" style voices like Sting's were the norm during this period. Perhaps, as instruments became louder, and the venues for hearing them larger, the more powerful-voiced operatic style developed and became the norm. Animal behaviorists have done some studies showing harp music is good at calming animals, especially cats. My cat was very skittish and unhappy as a result of very loud construction work next door and all other efforts to calm her down had not been totally successful. I got this and she (and I, if you must know) relaxed immediately. It is a beautiful sounding album. (And the bahaviorists have a point. Cats do seem to hear vibes in harp music we can't. It was like instant prozac for her.)

An excellent compilation of early church music performed beautifully by the Taverner Consort, Choir, and Players, and conducted by Andrew Parrott. The recording is clear and the sound well balanced. It is also an exceptional value - 30 tracts (2 1/2 hours of music) on 2 CDs for less that $10.

It's funny how over the years you find something special. This is one of those special music moments. I do think that every person will have one track they like better than others but for me there is one track that just chills you to the bone. It's worth the money for the whole CD just for the one track. I just wish this was a 7.1 surround sound recording. I guess one day it will be :o)

I so love the Catholic Latin Classics. we now have the Latin Mass in the City where I live, so it's great to listen to this CD on the way to Latin Mass :-)

I found this cd to be a beautiful addition to my collection. I do vinotherapy in my spa and use it for the background music. It is perfect for this wonderful therapy. Imagine a "Bella Lucce"" grapeseed crush body scrub, honey and wine mask and a relaxing massage, all listening to this beautiful cd. Highly recommend it.
