At less than $30, this has to be one of the greatest bargains currently out there. For many lovers of Chopin and piano playing, Rubinstein's late 1950s/early 1960s RCA survey is the Bible. Undoubtedly, it contains some godly Chopin playing. However, there is too much unevenness and lack of drama for this cycle to live up to its reference status.

Indeed, this is a Chopin Collection and not a complete survey, missing the Etudes, Rondos, Variations, early Polonaises, First Sonata, concert fantasies, chamber music as well as some miscellaneous pieces--most notably the Op post Nocturnes, Mazurkas, Waltzes and Prelude, plus the Op 45 Prelude and Allegro de concert. In contrast to the Ashkenazy set, this collection includes the two Concertos.

Particularly Rubinstein's Waltzes, ... Read More

After listening to a representative sample, I would argue this set is a bargain at 3 times the price:

Yes the recordings are much as Bach would have wanted them performed. Its as if you could enter a time capsule and arrive at the Thomaskirche just in time for the Sunday Mass. Most of the comments below about the sound or performance quality of this collection are due to this and not to production or recording standards which are high throughout.

The 17 discs of organ works alone are more than worth the price of admission. As a whole they could possibly be the best collection available today at any price. The vocal works are authentic to the era with modest ensembles that evoke the spirit of the lectionary or civic event. All Keyboarding is per harpsichord and wind instruments ... Read More

This is a masterful performance by the great Vladimir Ashkenazy of Chopin's favourite piano works. If you love Chopin's music and Ashkenazy's magic touch, this 2-disc CD is a must. Apart from all the all-time favourites such as grande valse brillante, op 18, nocturne in E flat major, op 9 no 2, Minute, Black Key, Military, Raindrop, Tristesse etc etc, it's interesting to note Ashkenazy's interpretation of Ballade in G minor, op 23 vis-a-vis Janusz Olejniczak playing it in the poignant scene of the award-winning Polanski's film "The Pianist" ie the piece played by Adrien Brody in his role as Szpilman, the Jewish pianist in hiding, to the German officer Hosenfeld. Enjoy!!

If you a piano student, your teacher will probably assign you at least half of the compositions in this CD. You need to hear how they should be played. This is a wonderful CD to use to help you learn the pieces. These piano selections are not the "World's Favorites" for nothing - they are memorable and enjoyable for young and old alike. I love this CD.

I was expecting this to be true to its title"Meditation".
Though nice it's really just a random selection of music
not necessarily soft or meditative.

Mozart's piano sonatas are like listening to ice cream. They are just music. And I mean this in the most positive sense. Mozart's good artistic taste manifests itself in being profoundly unpretentious and self-effacing. As Raymond Chandler said, "There is no great and important art; there is only art... and precious little of that."
Mozart's music is inconsequential as music so rarely is. It asks very little of the listener and provides so much. It is for this reason that it is perfect background or atmospheric music. It GOES with things in the way that Schubert (e.g.) does not. I recommend eating vanilla ice cream while listening to Mozart piano sonatas. This will afford you an experience of synesthesia that blows the mind.

writing a review of this seems fairly inconsequential, if I projected negative-isms would that dilute the lines of receipts? or interest?, I would not only be required to apologize for negative quips, but seek counseling,for some pathological illness, some cognitive mis-firings within my listening constitution;

Most of this has all been recorded before,so afficiandos can compare;I try not to, I like Oppens full-tilt from the beginning;Rzewski(a Carter student) got me on Oppens and again you get the centerpiece of Carter, the "Night Fantasies", try to listen for the long-range polyrhythms over the entire work,try John Link, he can explain it; some odd ratio 179:124,happening over 20 minutes; aside from that Oppens plays beautifully impassioned,never compromising the complex edifice of the work; there is a thin ... Claudio Arrau is a very underrated Chopin interpreter. He is best known for his Olympian Beethoven, intellectual yet technically superb Liszt, and his unmatched Schumann.
Chopin's nocturnes contain beautiful melodies, audacious harmonic ingenuity, sentimental and nostalgic echoes, sultry and seductive episodes filled with requited and unrequited passions. Arrau takes a very methodical approach without sacrificing the alluring emotional and exotic aspects of these unique works.
A few of his interpretations must be highlighted. Arrau soars in the Nocturne Op 15 n 2 - especially in the agitated middle section. The nocturnes of Op 27, which Mendelssohn fancied that Chopin wrote with "a pen dipped in moonlight", are inspired - especially in both codas. The great C Minor Nocturne Op 48 n 1 finds him majestic in the exposition ... Read More
