This is a masterful performance by the great Vladimir Ashkenazy of Chopin's favourite piano works. If you love Chopin's music and Ashkenazy's magic touch, this 2-disc CD is a must. Apart from all the all-time favourites such as grande valse brillante, op 18, nocturne in E flat major, op 9 no 2, Minute, Black Key, Military, Raindrop, Tristesse etc etc, it's interesting to note Ashkenazy's interpretation of Ballade in G minor, op 23 vis-a-vis Janusz Olejniczak playing it in the poignant scene of the award-winning Polanski's film "The Pianist" ie the piece played by Adrien Brody in his role as Szpilman, the Jewish pianist in hiding, to the German officer Hosenfeld. I'm a seeker of the ideal Chopin. This performance is very good but if you have the Chopin recordings of Pollini,Perahia,Zimerman and Rubinstein then you probably don't need this one. But if you do decide to buy it you wont be disappointed.

This one is only O.K. Gives me a headache but the babies seem to like it.

The recording is wonderful despite the noise, and the performance is masterful. But while the mp3 files contain information for each track (album, performer, title, opus, movement), there is no mention of the composers. Most of the pieces are popular enough it's obvious. But really, this is basic and should be a part of each file.

With Argerich you simply cannot go wrong in the world of piano. There is so much passion, near recklessness and sheer power to rival even Liszt himself. The Scherzo is so clean and maintains an unmatched pace throughout - yet be not deceived as some uncredibly sweet moments will catch you unaware. The Toccata is truly devilish and one cannot comprehend how a human could reach such a tempo and yet hit all the required notes!! The Jeux d'eau makes one wonder who might posesse all these pianistic abilities; from dreamy images to listless moments where languor is at hand, from the most fluid and yes, watery splashes to crystal clear melodies! An excellent set that I've gotten much listening pleasure from, and will certainly continue to do so. Definitely 5 stars!!

I know that many reviewers find this to be one of the greatest piano discs ever recorded, so I hope that readers will be open to a contrary and somewhat heretical point of view. I never heard these pieces until I bought this CD. They are basically nice salon pieces: charming, melodic, lightweight. I notice that several reviewers have pointed out that Gilels does not play up the sentimentality in these pieces. Perhaps that's what I find lacking in these performances. I guess I am saying that I would prefer to hear frankly sentimental compositions such as these played with a great deal more sentiment. I view Stravinsky as being a gateway to modern music. Not only are these pieces essential to such, but they were conducted by Stravinsky and are, accordingly, a correct interpretation. Listening to this CD will lead one away from Romantic 19th Century music.

This family of pianist is single (as a whole) handedly boosting the a renewed interest for classical music for people of all ages. Their musical education is heard and seen in the videos and on the cd portion.

Well since I order this from amazon.com, I have listen to the whole cycle of symphonies several times, and what really cought my attention was his early symphonies, in particular the story behind the first symphony which I will not tell you so you can read it in the detailed liner notes of the CD. I don't think that I have a particular symphony by Dvorak, I like, but rather I say that I like them all equally. At the amazon.com price this is really a bargain, highly recommended music for all ages and walks of life. Kertesz and the Brits did a fantastic work.
