Books : Aliens and Alien Societies (Science Fiction Writing Series)
This is a good reference book. It explains what life might be like in certain star systems and what suns can support life. It has some science. It also tells you how to look at various cultures and develop your own through creative thinking and logic as well as looking at ecosystems on earth and how they could survive and develop as cultures. We really have everything here on earth that could be considered alien in one form of animal or another. This book helps you think about how and why your alien culture thinks and how it has evolved.

Books : Time Travel: A Writer's Guide to the Real Science of Plausible Time Travel (Science Fiction Writing Series)
I'm a layman when it comes to science, but I was interested in the theories of the reality of time travel. I tried another book (that will remain nameless) which didn't work at all for me. It was just way over my head. This one's great! It's got all of the same kind of information that the first one had, but Nahin is so much more understandable and gets his points across in a much more organized way.

He's literally writing for the lay person here-- the book is intended for writers who would like write science fiction, but want to be scientifically updated on the scientifically possible realities of time travel (both to the past and to the future), teleportation (through wormholes, bending of the 4 dimensions, etc.), the special and general theories of relativity and more. His premise is ... Read More

Books : The Writer's Guide to Fantasy Literature: From Dragons Lair to Hero Quest
This is a collection of essays and interviews from various fantasy authors. They share their views, thoughts, and techniques about writing fantasy. This is a book for people who want to learn from professional and successful fantasy authors.

I enjoyed this book because I was interested in what these authors had to say about fantasy. They gave very helpful advice about writing. I thought this book was very informative about the field of fantasy. It covers everything from generating ideas for novels to sending novels to publishers.

If you want to learn from the pro's, this is the book for you.

24.How to Write Science Fiction by: Matthew J. Costello

Books : How to Write Science Fiction
Pragmatic, informative, and to the point are the best adjectives to use in describing the contents of this how-to-book of writing science fiction. Matthew Costello doesn't go into literary theory about the genre nor does he lead the reader on an endless quest of defining science fiction. What you get is solid guidance on how to write, sell, and market a science fiction story that is believable.

Step by step the reader is shown the basic building blocks of creating a good story. After providing you with those essential elements, the author tells you the basic components of developing the science, worlds and characters in the piece. He also examines the classic works of science fiction's masters (Asimov, Silverberg, Card) to acquaint the reader with the various styles contained within the genre.

This book is worth owning because Gunn gives some excellent advice in certain sections. However, it depends on what type of "writing" book you need. The one book you can really jump into and read in one sitting is Orson Scott Card's "How to Write Science Fiction & Fantasy." I recommend Orson's book if you are thinking of writing SF&F, but you aren't sure if it's the right genre for you. Orson breaks everything down to basics so you will immediately know if SF&F is what you're after, but the problem is that he makes writing SF&F sound so easy. In contrast, Gunn's book is more philosophical and even literary. Philosophical problems aren't easy to solve in one sitting because you have to sit down and think them through. In other words Gunn's book can be intimidating if you are new to writing. I recommend reading ... Read More

It is rare that a book is written for teachers of kindergarten through 3rd grade students. Ms. Freeman gives teachers practical ways to go beyond science and social studies using Newbridge Big Books as catalysts for writing interesting non-fiction pieces. Her strategies are clear and examples are given throughout the book. This is a must have for thematic teaching - extending core subjects such as science and social studies into the language arts arena.

This book is a compilation of scholarly articles/essays by different authors. As such, it's not very consistent. Some segments were very insightful and interesting to read, while others were confused, off-base, or just plain inaccurate. Several of the chapters I read got basic information from the books wrong, such as one that described Hermione Granger as a "half-blood" (not true!), and one that seemed to completely misunderstand the crucial events at the end of book 3. When an author misunderstands such important basic information, it is hard for me to take their analyses seriously.

I wanted to like this book, but I can't reccommend it.

Books : How to Write Tales of Horror, Fantasy and Science Fiction
The book is the edited work of 26 writers, teachers and editors. The chapters are small, the details slim, the subjects bounce all over the place, and many of the rules and advice could be used by mystery or military writers. It was just too weak, telling me nothing that I couldn't guess at. If you want a solid piece of work about sci-fi/fantasy get the how-to-write books by Orson Scott Card. If you want just fantasy there are world building books by Gary Gygax. And if you want to learn about horror go to Stephen King. Go with the books that have the vision of one author, from the first page to the last.

I bought this book back when it was first published and anxiously awaited the promised sequel, which as far as I know never came. But this book is worth it, it's outstanding, and the best book on writing I've ever read. This is where I learned point of view and backfill ideas.
