61.They Wrote the Book: Thirteen Women Mystery Writers Tell All from: Spinsters Ink Books

Books : They Wrote the Book: Thirteen Women Mystery Writers Tell All
A tremendously engrossing and warm collection, THEY WROTE THE BOOK, contains essays by thirteen talented mystery authors on the craft of writing novels. "Beginning at the Beginning," Penny Sumner starts things off with advice about planning a novel and its opening. Marcia Muller, a pioneer in the field of writing women sleuths, talks about developing a series character while Ellen Hart covers sidekicks and supporting characters. Essays on writing villains, atmosphere/suspense, place, setting, character creation and development, research, plotting, style, pacing, and ending the mystery fill out the book.

One of my favorite essays is Joan M. Drury's "The Wrong Way: My Approach to Plot, Process, and Endings" in which she describes the organic methods she employs to create her stories. ... Read More

Books published to tie-in with movie releases are a staple of the most sprawling Borders to the airport bookstall. This is no new phenomenon; similar publications were already flourishing by 1914 at the beginning of feature-length and serial productions. Whether reissues of existing novels brought to the screen, or original stories based on a movie, both publishers and the film industry mutually benefitted from capitalizing on each other's product. The plentiful supply of such books over so many decades attests to their rapport with the audiences of both readers and filmgoers.

Despite their endurance, there is little scholarship on movie tie-in books and magazines. In Horror and Mystery Photoplay Editions and Magazine Fictionizations, Thomas Mann provides a major contribution of ... Read More

Books : Selected Letters of Dashiell Hammett
"Selected Letters of Dashiell Hammett" includes 950 letters that Dashiell Hammett wrote between 1921 and 1960, spanning most of his adult life, from before his marriage to Josephine Dolan to just months before his death in 1961 -though the meaty correspondence stops a few years before that. Daughter Josephine Hammett Marshall started the project, and she nicely summarizes what these letters say about her father in the book's foreword. Editor (and Hammett biographer) Richard Layman discusses the sources in the preface. The letters were addressed to at least 17 different people plus some miscellaneous correspondence, but the most frequent recipients, in descending order, are: Hammett's friend and companion, the playwright Lillian Hellman; daughter Mary Hammett; daughter Josephine Hammett; wife Josephine Dolan ... Books : Into the Badlands: Travels Through Urban America
This unpretentious literary travelogue provides an excellent window into a number of top American crime writers and the (mostly urban) areas they inhabit. Williams' 1989 circuit of the U.S. is a kind of crime fiction grand tour, as he visits thirteen established and up-and-coming authors (only one of whom is female) in ten locations, each of which gets about 20-25 pages or so, as follows:

Miami >> Carl Hiassen (Lucky You, Stormy Weather), James Hall Louisiana >> James Lee Burke New Mexico >> Tony Hillerman Los Angeles >> James Ellroy, Gar Anthony Haywood San Francisco >> Joe Gores (32 Cadillacs) Missoula, MT >> James Crumley (Bordersnakes) Chicago >> Sara Partesky, Eugene Izzi Detroit >> Elmore Leonard (Be Cool, Cuba Libre, Pronto, Pagan Babies, Riding the Rap) Boston >> George V. Books : Speaking of Murder: Interviews With the Masters of Mystery and Suspense, Vol. 1
This is a collection of interviews conducted in 1997 and 1998 with 21 writers. It is mainly intended for fans of the writers to give them some insight into the writers' thoughts about their writing. I bought it in order to get a little background on Sue Grafton, as questions keep coming up on her Forum on the Web. It also includes interviews with other popular authors including Marcia Muller, Anne Perry, Patricia Cornwell, Elizabeth Peters, Tony Hillerman, Ian Rankin, Elizabeth George, Mickey Spillane, Ed McMain, and others. The subtitle is Interviews with Masters of Mystery and Suspense. There is a volume 2 published later.

Books : Speaking of Murder: Interviews With the Masters of Mystery and Suspense, Vol. 2
This is the second volume of interviews with popular mystery writers. It contains 22 interviews covering different aspects of the authors backgrounds.

An interview with Janet Evanovich covers her development as a writer. It was a long hard road, including a couple of early novels that were not published, and several years writing romance novellas before finally arriving at the Stephanie Plum series.

An interview with J.A. Jance covers her early career (starting out selling insurance), and the necessity of marketing your own material. She indicates it was 50 percent writing and 50 percent marketing when she started out, doing booksigning tours on her own dime (no support from the publisher).

You get a good picture of how the various authors got started writing novels. Some ... Read More

70.In the Footsteps of Agatha Christie by: Francois Riviere, Jean-Bernard Naudin

Books : In the Footsteps of Agatha Christie
Beginning with text and photograph headers presented in the old manual typewriter fonts, Francois Riviere successfully transports her readers back to the Devon countryside of Agatha Christie's childhood. Early family pictures are interspersed with gorgeous color photos of the south of England, each one representing an event or memory which provided Christie with the germ of her intricate plots. Ms. Riviere provides a rare treat for devoted fans and casual readers alike: the personal life and environment of an author who guarded her privacy and was able, like her books, to keep us guessing. The Devonshire home of Greenway, not visible from the road but glimpsed by boat from the river Dart, is described in detail with ample color photos, as is the Burgh Hotel, the setting for "Evil Under The Sun" ...
