Books : The Writer's Complete Crime Reference Book
THE WRITER'S COMPLETE CRIME REFERENCE BOOK by Martin Roth is an excellent beginning for mystery fiction. Yes, it has been around for fifteen years and today there are several entire books for every chapter of the title, but it is still one of the best. This is especially true if the story is prior to 1993.
A must for every mystery writer's reference shelf for there are many times when all you need for a particular story is a general overview, not a full-fledged in depth report.
It has a detailed index for a quick search to give you information for doing a web search with the correct terminology.

Books : Amateur Detectives: A Writer's Guide to How Private Citizens Solve Criminal Cases (Howdunit)
When I first started reading Amateur Detectives, I felt that it needed much more than it offered, however as I kept reading the book kept getting better and better. As the book starts off, it talks about the history of amateur detectives, which is specifically geared towards detective novelists. I found it fascinating to learn where some very established writers got their inspiration.

The biggest (and best) section of this book talks about state and federal weapon regulations. It talks about concealed fire arms as well. It was very interesting to read the different laws per state, and especially interesting to read about my own state. I really have learned a lot about the gun regulations. This section really makes up for the slow beginning of the book.

Books : Secrets of the World's Best-Selling Writer: The Storytelling Techniques of Erle Stanley Gardner
Erle Stanley Garner was a self-taught author who kept detailed accounts of the development of his writing method. This collection of millions of notebooks, letters, memoranda, charts, lists, and even phrases are in a Collection at the University of Texas at Austin. The authors distilled these papers into a 286 page book that has a Bibliography and Index. The Foreword acknowledges the people who helped the authors.

Erle Stanley Gardner set a record for the 'Guinness Book of World Records' as the best selling author. Gardner had ten year's experience as a trial lawyer, intensive study and writing, a hyperactive personality, and an incredibly agile imagination. Gardner became the greatest writer of mystery fiction who ever lived, only being outsold worldwide by the Bible (p.14). Gardner ... Read More

Books : Writing the Mystery: A Start to Finish Guide for Both Novice and Professional
The interviews with published mystery authors are worth some time, but this book suffers greatly from a "tell, don't show" inversion of the classic advice to authors. Lots of direction, though it's very general (make sure your characters are interesting), and lots of "but not too much" (make sure you characters are interesting, but not too quirky). Very little direction about how to accomplish those goals. It falls into my category of yet another "craft" book that is more personal reflection and/or memoir than actual instruction.

Books : Malicious Intent : A Writer's Guide to How Murderers, Robbers, Rapists and Other Criminals Think (The Howdunit)
Modus Operandi: A Writer's Guide to How Criminals Work (Howdunit) was written by 2 detectives & therefore suffered from a lack of research, psychology of criminals, etc. This work is just the opposite. It's author is a writer--he could have used some help from the 2 detectives--and they could have used his help too. Together they might have published a decent book. But...This book most certainly suffers from a distinct lack of balance. It reminds me of a come-on ad on TV for a new movie--hyped, exaggerated, lurid, etc. Its language is inflammatory, incendiary, propagandist, even gruesome, and it's full of hyperbole, unsubstantiated opinions (given as if they were facts), etc. It includes many silly bullet lists and a great deal of historical misinformation. For example, he lists Gilles de Rais ... Read More

Books : Speaking of Murder: Interviews With the Masters of Mystery and Suspense, Vol. 1
This is a collection of interviews conducted in 1997 and 1998 with 21 writers. It is mainly intended for fans of the writers to give them some insight into the writers' thoughts about their writing. I bought it in order to get a little background on Sue Grafton, as questions keep coming up on her Forum on the Web. It also includes interviews with other popular authors including Marcia Muller, Anne Perry, Patricia Cornwell, Elizabeth Peters, Tony Hillerman, Ian Rankin, Elizabeth George, Mickey Spillane, Ed McMain, and others. The subtitle is Interviews with Masters of Mystery and Suspense. There is a volume 2 published later.

Books : Speaking of Murder: Interviews With the Masters of Mystery and Suspense, Vol. 2
This is the second volume of interviews with popular mystery writers. It contains 22 interviews covering different aspects of the authors backgrounds.

An interview with Janet Evanovich covers her development as a writer. It was a long hard road, including a couple of early novels that were not published, and several years writing romance novellas before finally arriving at the Stephanie Plum series.

An interview with J.A. Jance covers her early career (starting out selling insurance), and the necessity of marketing your own material. She indicates it was 50 percent writing and 50 percent marketing when she started out, doing booksigning tours on her own dime (no support from the publisher).

You get a good picture of how the various authors got started writing novels. Some ... Read More
