I liked this book more than I expected too. It's stories of dogs by the women that loved them. There are women of all kinds, dogs of all kinds, and each woman has a different voice that makes the book easy to read. The stories are very different. Like an complation some stories are better than others, and some are just funny. If you love dogs like I do you can always appreciate a good dog story, told well....well.

This is truly one of the cult pieces of literature, right up there with Tropic of Cancer and even Fight Club. The writing is beautiful and erotic, and Nin comes across as a mature individual with special needs and insights. While every woman should read this book, guys will enjoy seeing things from the "other side."

Books : The Kiss : A Memoir (Narrated by Kathryn Harrison)
If incest bothers you, read this anyways. Be aware that your neighbors and even your own families may be living lives that you would find shocking. The author bares her soul in a way most never do and never will. I loved this book and it is written in a poetic and deep fashion. You will always remember this book. When she cuts her hair, you will weep with her. Remember when Britney Spear's shaved her head? She did it to express a burning pain inside and Katherine Harrison's experience is very familiar.

Perhaps if I was adopted or into tracing my family's ancestry, I would have enjoyed this book more. For me, reading this book was like watching someone else's family videos. I could understand how the process was deeply affecting for her, but the story didn't connect with me emotionally.

This is by far the best biography on Laura Ingalls Wilder available. This is a scholarly, indepth look that goes beyond her books and looks into what made her a writer. Written for adults.

Reeve Lindbergh gives a most interesting overview of her very famous parents - her father with his eccentric behavior - her mother with her focus on life through the eyes of a true poet. Her parents would be proud of her writing skills and her father would probably have given her rare praise for this particular book as well as her others. Kathleen Wyatt

Heilbrun provides an up-close look into her accomplished, then increasingly unconventional life. The main theme of the book is that of re-evaluating her life beyond age sixty. After a thirty-year tenure as an English professor at Columbia University, she was fortunate to enjoy a comfortable income in her retirement. Yet this fact did not spare her from the questioning that often accompanies this momentous life passage.
At age sixty-two, she published "Writing a Woman's Life," where she mused on aging, friendship, marriage, etc. Always a woman of strong convictions, Heilbrun had professed she would commit suicide by age seventy. But she surprised herself when she found her sixties to be quite rewarding.
She credits close friendships with women and colleagues, for making her sixties her happiest decade. ... Read More

An engaging, entertaining read by a skillful writer. . .but if you want a thorough, complex picture of these four women (Parker, Ferber, Z. Fitzgerald, Millay) and their circles, you'll be better off reading a full-scale biography of each, one that places them in historical and literary context. This book's final paragraph sums up both its strengths and its shortcomings -- the ending is crisp and breezy, but it offers no thoughtful conclusions. Instead, it basically says (and I'm paraphrasing), "and so the 1920s ended and passed into history and the people described here went on and lived the rest of their lives." What we have overall is a well-phrased and smoothly-organized collection of largely unanalyzed details.

If you knew nothing about these writers beyond what you read here, you'd conclude that most ... Read More

I was lucky enough to see Lois Lowry speak in Knoxville, TN over a year ago. Lowry is a phenomenal story teller--both in print and in person. She told the audience much about her family and growing up...indulged us with photgraphs, stories, and memories. I felt like I was listening to a member of my own family telling me stories; I was completely enthralled and really appreciated Lowry willing sharing her life with so many people. "Looking Back" gave me the same feeling.

The book is not a typical memoir: no linear narration. It is, as she states, "about moments, memories, fragments, falsehoods, and fantasies." Photographs (most taken by herself or her father) are dated and presented with short explanations, memories, or revelations. It brings together two of my very favorite things: pictures and stories. I especially ... Read More
