The book lead to an interesting discussion as some liked the book and some didn't While at times difficult to follow overall I felt what I call the wow factor. It really showed how 9-11 or just the lost of a parent in a tramatic way can effect a young boy

I read this book for the first time in high school I loved it. I found it to be detailed and I felt like I was in the village and I knew the people. The ending is extremely sad.

In case people think the comparison is meant as a compliment, it's not. This book had the same annoying way of coming up with coincidences that put people in the middle of "supposedly" historical occurrences. Just as I couldn't finish watching the movie, I couldn't finish reading this book. The characters and events were bland, and the magical realism didn't work.

I couldn't understand why this book is so popular until I started reading the reviews and found out that it's an Oprah's Book Club selection. The copy I have doesn't have her logo. The logo is for me is an automatic indication that a book is going to be cheesy and poorly written.

If you want to read excellent Greek tragedies about an incestuous relationship and its result, I suggest reading "Oedipus" and "Antigone" ... Read More

I purchased this book simply to replace my original copy, which I loaned out and which was never returned. Reading this book has been a favorite part of my Christmas for many years. While I regret losing my old copy, I am thankful I will now be able to carry on this tradition.

I knew better than to take this book at anything more than what it is: A work of fiction. With that approach, I found it very fun to read. The plot is interesting, the characters are well written and believable, and there is enough back-story to help suspend disbelief.

I can't say more on the plot because it's quite obvious what the plot is just from illustrations of the novel. But on the "controversial" aspect of the novel involving the excessive use of the N word, people have to think of the time period that Twain is writing about and when the novel was published.
The novel takes place in Missouri (a slave border state) in the 1830s. We use the term African-American or black now. Before that it was Afro-Americans, coloreds, Negr--s. The list goes on and on. The overall attitude was that as the terms changed the previous one was seen as more offensive than the progressive current one. Yes, that meant there was a time when the word "colored" was used by people who considered themselves progressive in terms of racial attitudes. But in the Antebellum South the use of ... Read More

There was a point in this book when I had to decide if I wanted to continue. Only one other book in the last couple of years made me think that: A Wolf at the Table. That one so brutalized me as a reader that I never picked it back up. One Thousand White Women isn't nearly as harsh--or as well written. Still, it's clear where the book is headed, and I had to decide if I wanted to be sad while I read the last third of the book. I did finish, and I'm glad I did. Glad, but not surprised.

This story of May Dodd and her life with a band of Cheyenne Indians in 1875 is interesting and diverting. It's an intriguing idea: Women traded for horses, and then the "brides" contracted to be brood mares for the tribe. I enjoyed reading how Native Americans lived then, and all the little details of tribal life. Still, the ... Read More

68.For Whom the Bell Tolls by: Ernest Hemingway

Books : For Whom the Bell Tolls
This is my third experience with Hemingway, and while I fully expect to complete the entire Hemingway collection, I can't quite find it within myself to award five stars to any of the works I've read to date.

In each of the novels (The Sun Also Rises and Farewell to Arms being the other two) I've been entranced at times by the hauntingly beautiful writing, however there have been periods where the story drags, where the almost stream of consciousness style grinds the action to a halt. Not long enough to kill the story, but enough to impact the overall reading experience.

This novel is set in Spain, during the Spanish Civil War, the idealogical precursor to the Fascist/Communist clash soon to come on the Eastern Front of World War II. The story primarily involves American Spanish professor and ... Read More

I'm hoping I'll find a funnier book - life can always be a little bit better! But I'm not greedy. Between the cast of characters, each a gem, to the almost unbearable richness of the odiousness of the main character himself, to sentences like "Patrolman Mancuso's love of the motorcycle was platonically intense.", I don't know what else I could ask for. Oh, I know. Amnesia. I could ask for amnesia.

Books : A Walk to Remember
After reading the first 2 books by Nicholas I figured I would go in order of how they were written and "A WALK" being the 3RD. It was was heart breaker, Jamie was the preacher daughter and where ever she went she took her bible. Landon was a troubled teenager, who after a play and going to the orphanage falls in love with Jamie. When she tells him she is sick, he is heartbroken. I had tears in the eyes for a while in some of the chapters. At the end you never really know if Jamie dies or not from being sick, you have to use your heart to figure it out.
