I think the book is wonderful. I wanted to attain a better sense of Charles A Lindbergh and what better
way then to read something he wrote. He is a good writer and his character comes through. It is also very
enterntaining and down to the practically of having real substance of history in the book. I am greatful to have read it and attained a glimps of a cherished individual in our aviation history.

This small volume overflows with passion for Barcelona's art and architecture, subjects Hughes generously expands to include cultural history, food, and politics, as well as sketches of his personal engagement with Barcelona's people and the creative life-force of the city. Hughes writes, "You are lucky if not too late in life, you discover a second city other than your place of birth which becomes a true home town."

First, I applaud the author for his earlier humanitarian efforts. However, I can't help but get the feeling the entire time he was really only seeking adventure. I know there are thousands of people who volunteer for humanitarian efforts for all of the right reasons, it just doesn't mean everyone does. For example, there are plenty of poor/underprviledged/needy (whatever you wish to call them) right under the author's nose in Grand Rapids, MI. But then again, that wouldn't give him "stories to keep the grandkids busy for hours".

Also, there really isn't anything wrong with volunteering for Foreign Humanitarian Aid efforts partially for the experience. Just don't write a book afterward unless you have a point to make.

To be frank, the author seemed to be quite self ... Read More

With her usual wit and style, MFK Fisher brings the food and atmosphere of Dijon alive. It is a fun book, perfect as an introduction to a way of life that is both foreign and dated. The delights of the table set by an eccentric landlady and shared with a variety of characters from the building, are extravegant. Fisher also draws a picture of the town's restaurants, markets, and life.

A good read.

Disclaimer: I have been a librarian for 35 years, and a motorcycle rider for 46 years, so I can hardly claim to be a typical or neutral reviewer of this book. If Amazon permitted 6 stars, I would award them. It is a rare event indeed to find a work that so lovingly deals with both motorcycle riding and books.

Ted Bishop captures vividly the essence of long distance motorcycle riding, including writing in one's head while riding, and the distraction to a writer to riding in one's head while attempting to write (a considerably less dangerous activity). His words took me back to an 11,000-mile ride that I made two years ago, along many of the same roads.

Equally vivid are his characterizations of librarians and archivists who work in special collections, and of the process by which a scholar mines the ... Read More

This book is well-written with characters vividly brought to life. It also has exciting history tidbits I didn't know.

The author did a great job of keeping the story moving along, without getting trapped in the long-winded prose, providing only insightful excerpts.

The author also did a great job of providing short bios of other famous people that Holman interacted with.

The only thing I wish the book had were maps of James Holman's travels (which I did find on the author's website).

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Had a hard time putting it down.

58.Still Waters by: Jennifer Lauck
2001-10
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Books : Still Waters
This book is a sequel to the author's first autobiography, 'Blackbird: A Childhood Lost And Found.'

'Still Waters' affected me even more strongly than the first book, because it more closely mirrored my own childhood and young adulthood. There are millions of kids who are not foster children but what I call shuffled kids, sent from one relative to the next, from one family friend to the next, and back again.

At one point in the book, Lauck writes about staying a few days at a relative's house, where there are no other children, and she is comfortable and happy, and there's more than enough room for her to live there without being in the way. Yet inexplicably that relative sends her off to live with someone else and no real explanation is given.

Despite being shuffled around like a deck ... Read More

"In 1898, Fanny Bullock Workman launched her assault on the Himalayas. Hanging from the handlebars of her bicycle was a tin teakettle. Her pith helmet harbored the badge of the Touring Club of France. A final accessory, one that never left her side and was scarcely less indispensable than her teakettle, was her husband." And as they journeyed, they added such "items as a whip (to drive away the dogs who chased Mrs. Workman's skirts), a pistol (for any men similarly inclined), and a Kodak camera."

This fascinating book celebrates the courageous journeys of thirty-one women from fourteen countries. In addition to Workman, they include Fanny Vandegrift, wife of Robert Louis Stevenson, Nellie Bly, a journalist who went around the world in 72 days, Ida Pfeiffer, Alexine Tinne and Florence Baker and others.

While "Barcelona" was intended as a social and artistic history, not as a guidebook, it is sufficiently detailed as to have gotten a friend of mine in trouble there.

Few stones are left unturned. One is an exploration of Catalan nativity scenes. These include, typically, a figure of a squatting peasant defecating, symbolic of the fertility of the soil. Characteristically, Hughes knows of a museum of these figures, in the upper story of an obscure building on a byway.

A friend of mine was traveling to Barcelona on a business trip, so I asked her to pick up one of these peasants for my own Christmas display. Her Catalan hosts were extremely displeased to learn that she knew about this part of their history.

Catalans, famous heretics, have always been known for going their own way, and as -- originally -- an art historian ... Read More
