I ompletely understand how Sarah felt. I also am married to a frenchman from the north of France. Every story she tells I have also lived. I understand how you are invisible at parties, the need to be well dressed always. I am American and have been in those uncomfortable situations where politics has been brought up in conversation making you want to crawl under the table rather than try to defend (in french no less)your country's actions. I have also wished my husband was from a nice town in Provence rather than a amall village in the Pas de Calais. But I wouldn't give up my French family and friends for anything. This book is right on. I laughed so much and read passages outloud to my husband.

Canoeing with the Cree by Eric Sevareid is one of the more unique works I have had the pleasure of reading over the past several years. In 1930, Sevareid (Yes, the famous news man), and his good friend and school mate, Walter C. Port, set out on an adventure that few of us could ever dream. They traveled by canoe from Minneapolis all the way to Hudson Bay! This journey covered 2,250 miles and went through some of the harshest wilderness in North America. There are several facts that make this adventure even more unique (as if the simple trip was not enough). First, Sevareid was only 17 years old at the time and his friend, Walter was only 19. Both boys were what would be classified a "city boys," in that they had never experienced the out of doors, nor had they any experience in canoeing. Secondly, ... Read More

23.In Search of Captain Zero: A Surfer's Road Trip Beyond the End of the Road by: Allan Weisbecker

I picked up this book after having read the fictional "Cosmic Banditos". It's the mind-boggling road diary of Weisbecker's trip off the grid. He sells off his life, grabs his dog and surfboards, and heads out with no real direction other than 'south'. His funny, relaxed writing evokes a storytelling session around a campfire on the beach.

This is the kind of audacious drop-out from society that most of us will only dream about. After cringing at some of Weisbecker's more harrowing adventures, some of us will be glad we never took the leap. The story takes an uncomfortable turn when Captain zero is finally found, a turn which may cement your commitment to staying safely on the grid.

Interesting and well written story of two kids flying across the country in a Piper Cub. Great adventure and an example of God's provision and protection even when people don't acknowledge His existence.

Fascinating!!

I only wish more photos, diagrams and website links and/or information (on those specific archeological discoveries and digs) would have been provided, so that we could have researched it a bit more, and tracked any furhter progress.

The listings of the incredible array of artifacts found in these archeoligical digs would have also benefited by some drawings and photos.

That being said, this is a wonderful book that brings the action to life -- I can almost see the ship rise and fall with the waves. The natives (skraalings) and the landscape of the new world is rendered in vivid word pictures. The descriptions of the Viking farms in Greenland and the hazardous trips sometimes needed to be made to reach those farms, gives me a sense of the tremendous resiliency ... Read More

Interesting and enjoyable reading for about 2/3 of the book. Sometimes Ms. Maclaine's "spiritual travels" leave me in my own world, with the here and now. Just a bit too much.

This book is absolutely phenomenal!! I bought the book with Franz and his brother came to the UC Davis bookstore (and they both signed it for me!) but didn't end up reading it until 2 years later while I was on holiday in Japan and Shanghai.

I didn't have a highlighter with me so I decided to dog ear any pages that stood out to me...the whole book is pretty much dog eared!

seriously - it's a really FUNNY memoir of his travels.. and I think it definitely hits home more for anyone who has traveled (even if not to the extent they have!). He points out nuances about traveling that you will totally understand and you'll chuckle to yourself when you realize how TRUE everything he says is.

Definitely a must read!

The first few chapters of this book made me laugh out loud,as the Stobs struggle to learn about their new boat and deal with the invariable problems with a new-used boat. Then the book settled down into a straight travelog, interspersed with a little strained humor. Worth reading. Gave me a new interest in cruising the Tennessee-Tom Bigbee.

Now that summer is officially over, and I spend most of my waking hours sequestered in a classroom, I seek out travel books so that at least my mind can pretend it is somewhere else. Usually, I am attracted to exotic travel tales, so at first I was not that impressed that Alice Steinbach chose to spend her six months abroad in western Europe. I could not imagine what exciting adventures she could get into in England, France, and Italy, but as I read on Alice explained that the point of her trip was not to discover a crazy adventure but to rediscover the adventurer she used to be before life and responsibilities took over. As a divorced woman with two grown children, Alice decided that she had reached a point where she could go out and find the woman she used to be. Traveling along with Alice was like sitting down and taking ... Read More
