I'm not sure where to begin reviewing. Many of you who are reading this are at least familiar with the title "Moby Dick" or "The Whale", and if you have read this incredible and penetrating book, most of you (I hope) will be in awe from its memories: fearful, heavy, and strange. For those who say the book is too "wordy", then you simply don't understand style and taste. Melville manages to go from an incredibly tight narrative at one page to something distant and spacey the next page. Indeed, it is a magical novel or as many call it a "masterpiece". Since most people - from what I have gathered here alone - review this book splendidly, I will not spend much time writing about it. In fact, it is best one digests this book arbitrarily, otherwise its weight may not be as profound. There is much speculation ... Read More

I bought this book and studied it over the summer before taking my exam. The books is nicely laid out, with a section each on Verbal Reasoning, Writing, Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Physics. There is a practice test (about 35 questions or so) at the end of each section, as well as a full length paper test. Online and on the CD offer additional practice sets and I believe another full-length test.

The good stuff:
-Good inside strategies and information about the test
-Offers multiple strategies for remembering information, including side notes linking the concept to another concept in another section.
-Concise, but thorough review
-Good explanation of every question

The bad stuff:
-More errors than would be acceptable for a textbook. ... Read More

Did I pass the SPHR exam on the first try? Yes! Did I use this book as a study tool- also, Yes! Would I recommend using this book to study for the exam... yes. Sort of. This book was helpful in that it laid out a pretty good foundation to build a course of study. However, given the abbreviated length of time given to prepare coupled with the amount of material covered on the exam, my belief is that you will need more than this book to pass the test. Certain subjects (which were covered extensively on the exam), were only skimmed in this text. Use this as a RESOURCE only, but don't depend on it alone to pass.

Edward P. Jones wrote a terrific book of short stories in 1991, Lost In The City, that was justifiably critically praised, for nine of its fourteen tales are great, but it was forgotten until his 2003 Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winning novel, The Known World, came out. Then his publisher, Amistad Press, rushed to reprint the earlier work, to cash in on the publicity, after years of pulping old copies. It is ironic, because in this edition of the novel, the best writing in the whole book comes from an epilogue that reprints perhaps the best of those tales, The Girl Who Raised Pigeons, and it stands in sharp contrast to the jumbled, muddied work that is the bulk of Jones' novel. Even its very title is muddied, as it primarily refers to the extant world of bondage it portrays, and a host of lesser oblique meanings ... Read More

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Native Son
Native Son / 0-06-080977-9

This book should be read alongside Ellison's superb Invisible Man. Native Son employs much the same idea - namely, that it is difficult to NOT become what others want to force you to become.

Bigger, the focus of this novel, is a good man. He's not the best, or the smartest, or the oldest, or the wisest, but he has a good heart. He wants to become a better person - he wants to BE 'bigger' in a real sense of personal growth. Not that he would think of it in these terms - Bigger is a simple man at heart.

When Bigger finds himself innocently trapped in a compromising position - a position that will be misunderstood, a position that will cause him to bear the worst of false accusations, a position that could cost his freedom and even his life - he tries his best to cover ... Read More
