I really enjoyed this book!
Among other things I like about Steinbeck, that all persons have faults as well, even the ones you like. And they are very interesting characters. And its very easy to read.

24.Of Mice and Men by: John Steinbeck

Books : Of Mice and Men
Of Mice and Men starts out as a quite confusing book, jumping straight into the plot, but it quickly picks up and gets you into the story. It starts off with an immensely strong, yet hopeful brute tagging along a small witty man,who chooses to care for him. They are both very hopeful about the life they could soon make together apart from the rest of the world.
But in the end the brute-ish man, Lenny, is caught alone without George, the witty caregiver and loses control of himself. He ends up showing George that all the while there really was no hope at the dream-life, only that he had told Lenny it's work out so long, he started to want to believe it himself, and he did. Through it all George continues to want the best for Lenny...

This book was published originally in 1958, collecting Steinbeck's WWII reports from 1943. He wrote an introduction, which is among my favorite Steinbeck texts (and I am a critical admirer of the man, he was a first class conventional writer, just below the level of creative genius).
Steinbeck actually suggest we ignore these reports. He gives a brillant reflection on war reporting: censors plus voluntary efforts to support the war effort conspired to produce a castrated kind of texts. All American soldiers were heros. No American general officer was a blunderer or a bad leader. No American war campaign was a flop, and if they appeared to be such, it was for a greater and as yet not understood good.
In other words: stay away, go straight away for the 'truth' as e.g. in Mailer's The Naked and the Dead.

This is Steinbeck's fifth novel or more accurately a novella. The writing is exceptional and it must be ranked as average or better, but it is short and cannot be compared with his best known novel "Grapes of Wrath." Steinbeck shifts his focus away from California and gives us a very interesting book based on World War II. Think it is exceptional and one of his better short works. It is almost as good as his other famous novella "Of Mice and Men," which was his first novel. I have read most of his works including the present, which is an interesting and a must read for Steinbeck fans. It has interesting prose and good drama, and it is very well written. I would rank it on par with "Cannery Row" and ahead of "The Pearl" and better than "Tortilla Flat" in my opinion - based on the writing.

It is an interesting book. ... Read More

Steinbeck's book comes with this comment on the back cover: "Each of these self-contained stories is linked to the others by the presence of the Munroes, a family whose misguided behavior and lack of sensitivity precipitate disasters and tragedies." This opinion, which the author of the Introduction seems to endorse, strikes me as a very surface take on the deeper significance of these stories.

The Munroes do show up in all of them; but when they do, a bubble of fantasy is punctured. They are the Nemesis principle, the breath of reality, among people lost in delusions and deceptions. Because of it, a man nicknamed Shark loses his social mask and finds his backbone, a father is forced to give up custody of his wild son, another father realizes the wrongness of raising his son in isolated poverty, a woman lets go of the insane ... 29.The Pearl by: John Steinbeck

Books : The Pearl
Kino, his wife Juana, and their baby son Coyotito, live a simple life in an ocean-side village in Mexico. Kino pearl-dives for a living. He and his family are native people of the original Aztec stock. Life for them is not perfect, indeed, the injustice of subjugation to the Spanish sometimes burns fierce in their hearts, but much of the time their existance in their small brush hut is sweet. Then one day Kino brings to the surface a huge pearl, a perfect pearl, "the Pearl of the World". This discovery promises many changes to the better, and it seems Kino's every dream will be fulfilled, but as news of the find spreads the forces of evil stir as greed and malice build.

In this novella Steinbeck uses simple language to create some of the atmosphere of a folk-tale. He has, however, combined this atmosphere with the character development ... Read More

While John Steinbeck is a master of Literature, The Long Valley's stories are all dull and some don't even feel like stories, but just descriptions of things (the short story "Breakfast" was overly pointless). This collection starts off great, with a couple of wonderful stories, but the second half of the book (along with The Red Pony parts (another of John Steinbeck's drab writings)) is very bad and yawn-inducing.

My favorite story was "The Flight", and that is the only reason I am rating this 2 stars instead of 1. "Johnny Bear" is also a good story in this collection, and a fairly humorous one as well.

Check this out at the library for a couple of good stories, but do not purchase it as it would be a waste of money. If you want to read great works by Steinbeck, check out East Of Eden, The Grapes Of Wrath, and Of Mice And Men.
