This is a true story about a proud family patriarch, his relationships and most notably the one with his youngest daughter, who is the author of the book. This prominent Egyptian family is forced to leave their home when Jews were no longer able to live safely in Egypt. The story focuses on the difficult choice to abandon all that is familiar, for a journey into the unknown. The family lands in Paris, and eventually settles in New York. This is a family that had wealth and importance but becomes dependent on social services and the Jewish community for daily living. It is a slow read, but stays with the reader.

Books : A Voyage Long and Strange: Rediscovering the New World
I have been a long-time fan of Tony Horwitz, and always look forward to his historic-based, quirky and entertaining books. A Journey Long and Strange: Rediscovering the New World follows his usual formula in traveling in the steps of history. In this case, he follows in the steps of America's early explorers.

While vacationing in New England, Horwitz visits Plymouth Rock (more like Plymouth Pebble, he laments). This former history major realized that what he didn't know about American's early explorers was a "chasm." He discovers that he "mislaid an entire century, the one separating Columbus's sail in 1492 from Jamestown's founding in 10-0-something." This story actually ends at Plymouth Rock, rather than begins.

As with his previous books, Horwitz sets off to ... Read More

Every page of this book yields unexpected and brilliant insights and sidelights into the motley collection of nationalities, languages, and races that somehow became France. The story of Bernadette of Lourdes. The creation of the "official" meter. The persecution of a particular group for a thousand years (and no, it wasn't the Jews). Add to this a smooth and witty prose style and you have a book that shouldn't be missed. It's one of those rare books about which, as Holden Caulfield would say, you feel like calling up the author after reading it.

David Maraniss has written so many wonderful books that it isn't surprising to find "Rome 1960" to be such a great read. But it's still reassuring. Maraniss digs deep for his reporting, and writes with a clear eye and a genuine point of view. Good from beginning to end.

The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial Of Human Nature (2002)- follows in the trail of the prior books, which established SP as 1 of the top dogs in neural science. In this review I want to focus a little bit on how well SP writes, as well as discussing his ideas. The former I want to put out there for this reason- rarely is the writing style of a science book ever approached; save for famously nebulous koans as lucid, thrilling, or enthralling. What exactly do terms like that mean, in general, & specifically related to the work at hand? That is a rhetorical question, folks.
I want to approach both of these aspects of his writing in a fairly straightforward way. After I've chronologically highlighted some of the pros & cons of the book (artistically & scientifically), then I will go back & essay some of the ideas ... Read More

I was loaned this book by a friend. He told me just to "trust him" and read it. I was hesitant and wasn't sure if I would like this book, but now you can "trust me". If you have any interest at all in Ireland, culture, sociology, or that particular time period you will love this insightful memoir. This book will stay with you, and after only a dozen pages you will be hooked and unable to put it down.

18.How the Irish Saved Civilization by: Thomas Cahill

Books : How the Irish Saved Civilization
This book came out in 1995. And I've avoided it since then.

I was wrong.

I'd been told the book is superficial. It is: any book of this length that tries to cover a subject of the length and breadth here is sure to be superficial.

And perhaps superficial is too harsh. "A good overview" might be a better way of describing it.

But this is an engaging, entertaining read. I found myself drawn into a subject I knew little about, the history, people, culture and faith of Ireland and the Celts. For those wanting more background, Cahill provides a useful bibliography at the end. Those wishing for more than this overview can find years of study in the books recommended in the bibliography.

An overview gets us started. It's not where we should stop, but it provides a means of seeing ... Read More

19.Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways in America (America a Cultural History, Vol 1) by: David Hackett Fischer

Books : Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways in America (America a Cultural History, Vol 1)
This book looks at the ethnic origins, customs and traditions of America's British immigrants to North America from the early 17th Century to the late 18th Century. The author breaks down this migration in a set of four major immigrations and four different ethnic and social cultures. The four being; 1. East Anglia to Massachusetts: The exodus of the English Puritans, 2. The South of England to Virginia: Cavaliers and Indentured Servants, 3. North Midlands to the Delaware: The Friends Migration, and 4. Borderlands to the Backcountry: The flight from North Britain. While all of these immigrants came from Great Britain they were socially and culturally distant.

When I began reading this book, I thought that I might just skim through it as I do with many of my books of the same subject, picking through it to find the meaty substance of which ... Read More

This was a great read. I like how the author highlighted the social and the economic and the cultural changes that took place during these formative years in 20th century America. You read about the genius, yet uncompromising Henry Ford, who designed the Model T, and later the Model A, but failed in his bid to create a winning farm tractor (they kept tipping over backward).

You will also read about the greed and the heavy loans that banks gave out that led to the 1929 stock market crash. But you will also read about FDR's tremendous reforms: The creation of Social Security, the SEC, the FDIC, the Agricultural Adjustment Act (which was later struck down by the Supreme Court, but reintroduced in a different incarnation based on taxes), TVA, and many others.

I enjoyed reading about how American life changed with the advent of electric light ... Read More
