Last night I read the first paragraph of every short story in THE BEST AMERICAN SHORT STORIES 2008 to determine if any first paragraph made me want to read the second paragraph. Only one did: "Buying Lenin" by Miroslav Penkov. Mr. Penkov is from Bulgaria. I found the story exceptionally well written. It's a given that I'll be buying any publication that Mr. Penkov writes in the future. I am not a professional reviewer, but I know a great author when I read one. Entertaining as well was the biography in the back of the book on this new author. Of course I'll probably read the others stories that were written by the likes of Jonathan Lethem and Alice Munro.

Graphic and entertaining. In a good way, of course. I found the main character absolutely intriguing, and was delighted to read small excerpts from his past every once in a while. The rest of the characters all had a certain charm to them. The first-person narrative was great, and never exasperating. However, the book seemed to take too much time describing Victor's many sexual encounters, and not enough on his choking experiences. I knew the main character was a sex addict and all, but isn't the book called Choke? I found myself sitting between my mom and grandma at Thanksgiving reading a detailed sex scene, looking over my shoulder every few seconds as to make sure they weren't staring at me wide-eyed. The book was very well written. Not my type of book. It was selected as a book for my book club. I thought it would be more spiritual. A bit too much agony and strife to take in for a pleasure read.

One of my favorite Sedaris collections. It has some new stories as well as some old that I have read elsewhere. Great stocking stuffer for a Sedaris fan. All the stories are hilarious - especially "Santaland Diaries." Sedaris has a gift for humor that shines throughout this book.

I've always been interested in the Holocaust and thought I'd learned a lot about the different horrors that the victims suffered. But I had no idea that this happened in France and it was French police who arrested their own citizens! The author did a beautiful job of weaving the stories of a little girl, told in third person and an adult woman, told in first person from chapter to chapter. I was able to read this book rather quickly and appreciate the book group questions at the end. My only criticism was that the end of the book felt rushed, like the author was done with what she wanted to say and needed a quick way to wrap things up. The author was careful to make sure she was accurate with the historical aspects of the book, a quick check on google and I realized that she had done her research. I look forward to reading ... First off, I can't believe that I have never read this before. Maybe because the Pulitzer Prize was won, I figured that the stories would be too difficult to read or understand. Even though I really loved only 5 of the stories, the other 4 were enjoyable, I just didn't like them as much as the former. My favorities were: A Temporary Matter, about a young couple who happened to have electricity disconnected for one hour each day, to repair the lines after a snowstorm. The couple also seems to be disconnected, from each other, but this hour each night was the beginning to bring them together. I also loved: When Mr. Pirzada Came to Dine about a man who had left his country and his family (a wife and seven daughters) so that he could make money to take care of them, and eventually go back. I did not like the third series of this saga. The outcome was very predictable and the characters were underdeveloped. Check out the Bobby Brown biography.
