I can't give this book 5 stars--horror really isn't my genre, and I'm not a fan of depressing endings.

Richard A. Clarke was a counterterrorism expert who served under 4 administrations--from Reagan through G. W. Bush. Against All Enemies tells about the war on terror, focusing primarily on what led up to 9/11 and the response to it.

Otto von Bismarck said "Laws are like sausages, it is better not to see them being made." (or something like that--I've seen it quoted several ways) and that's certainly true in this case. An even better quote might be the daffynition of Politics, n: Poly "many" + tics "blood-sucking parasites".

It's ugly. Very ugly. Politicians pursuing their own agendas, refusing to listen to advice that doesn't fit, being distracted from ... Read More

Let me put it this way: I started reading this book around 4 PM when we were evacuated to Huntsville, AL from Hurricane Gustav. I read all night and finished it the next morning! Although it is fiction, with it relating to 9/11, you think: This could have happened! And the biblical truths that were revealed in the character's lives (and deaths) touched my heart. Read it! You will be glad you did.

If you are in the firefighting profession, then I wouldn't hesitate to buy this book.

For me it was a good entertaining book but I didn't find that it was a page turner. I could easily go a few days without reading it and then read off a few chapters in one sitting.

This book doesn't buy into the hysteria of 9/11 conspiracy theories, and from what I've gathered reading the other reviews, most all of the bad reviews were from people who buy into that crap (in my humble opinion.).

It's a vey well researched and detailed book (maybe a little too much), but I do think that one will enjoy it if the topic seems interesting to you.

This book is an informative look at current middle east Arab thought from a somewhat unconventional pro-Israel viewpoint, which deserves to be read, but should be supplemented. Friedman is a thoughtful and creative thinker as evidenced by his book The World is Flat. In Longitudes he reprints his newspaper columns from around 9-11 to the time the US invaded Iraq, which at times is repetitive, but gives a good account of his thought development at the time. His main thesis is that Arab anger toward the US stems from bad leaders, bad governments, and not primarily from Israel. His line of reasoning therefore encouraged the nation building policies that led our country into the Iraq debacle. He sees the Palestinian issue as a poor excuse for violence, and 9-11. He blames Arafat for the breakdown in peace talks, though the offer he was given ... Read More

Befitting a decorated ex-CIA head, this book by George Tenet is "artful political and moral ambiguity at its transparent best." It is equal parts: "after-the-fact expose" of Bush/Cheney Machiavellian incompetence, a chronology of bureaucratic in-fighting and turf battles; Tenet's own self-serving "CYA rationalizations" (especially for his most embarrassing and ignominious "slam dunk" moment); a summary of CIA history including many of it recent exploits in the new era of terrorism; plus a lot of inchoate soul-searching and "insider bureaucratic baseball."

Along with other "shunted aside" Bush insiders, Tenet, is yet another "come-to-Jesus" confessor who has belatedly confirmed what most of us now already know: that even as Cheney and Bush were entering the White House, Iraqi II was already a fait accompli: "a war in search of a reason ... Read More

The writing was superb. But the life of Mychal Judge surpassed anything that I could have ever envisioned. This priest was the true definition of the word, Catholic, which means universal. His priesthood, his faith and his life were all embracing, all encompassing. He listened. He did not judge. He understood. As a Franciscan, he knew humility and poverty intimately and he owned them. The goodness of his life allowed him to interact with people of all faiths. He was as comfortable in the White House as he was in the slums of New York. All people were equal. He befriended and respected those of different faiths. He befriended those who were no longer practicing any religion. He did not judge them; he honored and treasured them for their own innate goodness.

He had trials and tribulations and he met them head-on while he ... Read More

I was like the majority of American citizens before reading this book, not only unaware of alternative theories surrounding the happenings of 9/11, but also found myself indignant towards the far-fetched ideas when they were suggested to me. After reading this book, I now not only believe that the U.S. government was complicit to some degree in the dreadful events of that day, I have NO DOUBT whatsoever, none. David Griffin does an excellent job presenting the abundance of evidence in a logical, pragmatic fashion. For those of you who are inclined to lump this type of literature, in terms of credibility, with that relating to bigfoot or UFOs, please read the book before jumping to such a conclusion. Science and, more disturbingly, simple common sense are the tools that Griffin uses to justify his assertion.

I read this book while on an airplane en route to giving a presentation on emergency response.

What I did was scrap most of my prepared presentation and, instead, stood in the middle of the audience of senior emergency professionals, passed this book around, and suggested in the strongest possible way that they buy a copy and read it on the way home and mark the pages with little "yellow stickies", just as I had done.

This book is THAT good.

It doesn't matter whether the emergency is in a high rise or in a suburban sprawl.

All the essentials are in this book: the need for the police and firefighters to work together AND TO DRILL TOGETHER; that the real first responders in "102 Minutes" were the people who worked in the buildings and that there needed to be equipment prepositioned for the building occupants to use before ...
