Beautiful prose, with lots of description. I think I would have enjoyed the story more if it had moved a bit faster, but I did enjoy the author's style, and the characters were well developed. The ending was a bit of a let-down for me. I didn't realize it was a series, but it didn't engage me enough to read on.

For the past two days I have locked myself up and away from any form of life (it surprised me that I didn't even show any concern for Americas next top model primer that I was anticipating for months! Not to mention that I have a lot of House M.D to catch up on!) and I trapped myself inside the lives of Gemma Doyle and her friends and I must say I already miss them all.
The Sweet Far Thing is Bray's last and concluding book of the Gemma Doyle Trilogy, where Gemma has to make a lot of big decisions that will alter the faith of her friends, the order, the Rakshanas and of course the realms.
Set where we have left of in Rebel Angels, Gemma has the powers of the realms in the tip of her fingers and everyone wants it for their different purposes, Gemma's choice of giving it equally to everyone ... Read More

James Patterson keeps the hits coming with another "Just one more chapter, I swear!" page-turner installment of the runaways of the Angel Experiment. In order to fully appreciate this book, it's best to read it only after having read "Maximum Ride - The Angel Experiment," as you will find the racing action and astounding powers of these kids quite mind-boggling. Still on the run from The School, Max and her 5 friends run into what seems like more than they can handle. How will they ever hold it together?

The Clique actually made me think about how I live my life as a 7th grader, starting in a brand new school. Lisi seemed to be living inside a middle school, since she was able to give out problems a teenage girl might be going through in her middle school days. I gave this book, The Clique, 5 stars.

Honestly, A Great & Terrible Beauty (book 1) had me dozing off at times. I began Rebel Angels (book 2) expecting something like the first book, but I was thrilled to find myself mistaken. RA had me enthralled from beginning to end -- fast pace, amazing plot, adventurous characters, dark twists = A MUST READ! Looking back on it now, I would say that A Great & Terrible Beauty is essential to read before Rebel Angels, and despite my previously stated opinion of book 1, it plays an imperative role in the sequence of the story.

If you are a teenage girl who enjoys fantasy, a bit of magic (and some hints of evil here and there ;D), this is the trilogy for you! Oh, and if you didn't catch on -- Rebel Angels is amazing.

Junie B books are awesome. I mean, just plain great. But Jingle Bells is so funny I had to stop reading it to my daughter five times because I was laughing so hard. Barbara P is an amazing author..

Living Literature: Using Children's Literature to Support Reading and Language Arts

The prior reviews on The Wednesday Wars are astonishingly positive, and with good cause. If anyone knows Gary Schmidt's writing from Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy, the no one should be surprised. Schmidt is masterful at metaphoric language. In both novels, I found myself pausing in my reading at times, simply to reread and savor something amazing in the writing.

Set in the 1960's, The Wednesday Wars is both funny and heartwarming. Readers rally for, and sympathize with Holling who, because he's the only non-Catholic and Non-Jew in his class, is left alone every Wednesday afternoon when all other students are at Hebrew school or catechism. He believes his teacher must hate him. After all, ... Read More

Harriet The Spy was one of my favorites growing up and I had not read it in a long time and looking back I am not quite sure if all of the messages and meanings in the book can be fully understood by younger readers completely.

That is not meant in a bad way at all, the book works as a general reading book for younger more advanced readers in terms of the plot and Harriet as she goes through her life and journal, together with the ramifications of what those bring when the journal is discovered.

Of course young readers can relate to the feelings and the alienation, but there are so many messages that are being converyed that some of the them become clearer to see as you get a bit older - in other words this works for young readers on one or more levels and as an adult you can read it and see ... Mo Willems is one of my favorite kids' authors, mostly for his simply drawn yet totally on-target books such as the Pigeon series ("Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus") and those featuring the (unlikely) pair of Elephant and Piggie. Willems has an eye for subtle humor, and a pair of sentences or a squiggle here or there convey a great deal of (very funny) information.

Therefore, the Knuffle Bunny "series" (there are now two of them, the first won the Caldecott) represents a bit of a departure. Instead of uncluttered animal drawings against plain background, Willems places computer-aided characters against photos of urban surroundings. For example, on page 3, Willems superimposes wide-eyed, excited Trixie and her orangy-haired Dad on a sidewalk. The sidewalk is part of a photo that includes a very 50's looking black ... Read More
