Merridale's writing of the ordinary and typical Russian soldier (Ivan) comes as close as anything I have read that describes the torment, sacrifice and deception that the Russian soldier went through in WW II. It is the most fascinating account of not only the Russian military involvement but also a magnificent portrayal of the Russian culture as it truly existed in 1941.

It simply is a MUST READ ! Don't deprive yourself by passing it over. At some point in the book take note of Konstantine Simonov's poem "Wait for me and I shall Return": then look it up on internet. That's the spirit of Russians who endured the incredible.

"King, Kaiser, Tsar" gives a fascinating, up-close and personal look at George V of Great Britain, Wilhelm II of Germany and Nicholas II of Russia and the key roles they played in the 30-odd years that led up to World War I. Especially enthralling are the differences between the responsibilities and personalities of a constitutional monarch, an autocrat in an empire with a parliament but little real democracy, and an absolute monarch totally unsuited for his role.
Catrine Clay quotes voluminously from family letters and other sources concerning King George and Tsar Nicholas, showing how the complex intertwining of relationships among the children and grandchildren of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert made statesmanship and diplomacy a family affair as well as a national one in the late 19th ... Viktor Suvorov in his book Ice Breaker and his new work The Chief Culprit gives the real history behind World War II in Europe. He moves the whole question beyond the wooden typical explanation of the Germano-Soviet conflict into a titanic conflict for the survival of Europe against massive odds.

Joseph Stalin brutalized the Russian people to produce the largest military machine the world has ever seen for one purpose - World Revolution. In the book Hitler's Stooge, Soviet figures are revealed that show Soviet Communists were responsible for the deaths of 132 million people of the Soviet Union from 1917-1989. This was the human cost of the Soviet build up.

The typical history is that Russia was backward, their equipment poor, and the army badly trained. Suvorov goes into excruciating detail about ... Read More

Books : Biohazard: The Chilling True Story of the Largest Covert Biological Weapons Program in the World--Told from Inside by the Man Who Ran It
This book is a fantastic read. It really lets you in on what was going on in the Soviet Union in regards to their biological warfare programs. (It also informs you of the relationships between the Soviet Union and other countries such as India, Iraq, Cuba, etc. and the information/equipment that may have been passed on.) Ken Alibek has led an amazing life and this story could not have been told any better. It is told in an easy to understand format, but includes a lot of great information about the viruses and the implementation of them in weapons. He really explains about the structure of the program in an easy to understand way. The index in the back is great. If you are a fan of Richard Preston's books, you will enjoy this one. In fact, Mr. Alibek is referenced in the Demon in the Freezer. The realizations are scary, ... Read More

I purchased this book after reading Grossman's tour de force Life and Fate. This work consists of random snippets from Grossman's notebooks and correspondence as he traveled with the Red Army from 1941-1945. These snippets are placed into historical and geographic context by the translators of his work.

At times, the text is captivating and at times horrifying. At others, it seems merely random and poorly organized. The chapter detailing the liberation of Treblinka and Grossman's interviews of the witnesses and survivors was chilling and was read into the record at the war crimes trials at Nuremburg.

All in all, this book is a worthwhile read for anyone having an interest in World War II, the Red Army and war in general. Casual readers may not enjoy the experience.

Comrade J is an interesting, straightforward biography of one of the highest level KGB spies to defect to the US, and one who did so after the fall of the Berlin Wall, bringing insider perspective into both the defunct Soviet Union and current state of Russia under Putin with him. As such this is a very timely and topical book, and one that shines a light on a underappreciated area most Americans have cast in the shadow of apathy after the end of the Cold War. The most striking imports of the book are that, according to Sergei Tretyakov (the defector), little has changed in Russia since the dissolution of the USSR, that America, NATO and China remain the number 1 through 3 stated enemies of Russia, respectively, and the astonishing level of thugocracy/kleptocracy of the post Soviet "democratic" regimes, with Putin being the worst so far. ... I am a first generation Russian immigrant - grew up in Russia and Ukraine and came to US at the age of 23 in 2003. I bought this book to find some articulations of what I have experienced, I need it for one of my classes in grad school.

I started reading last night and almost got all the way through, what I can tell you at this point is - the author seems credible. I was offended by some of the things and some I feel were exaggerated... Overall, most of it sounds true for describing my grandparents, younger generations are a lot more westernized, living in a fast-paced world where everyone has to work for themselves and stay afloat in the global economy. If you are planning a trip to Russia, definitely read the book and you'll be more relaxed once you get there. Expect the worst, but hope for the best! :)

For 50 years, few have disputed that Stalin was one of the cruelest men since Vlad the Impaler and his own contemporary, Adolf Hitler. It's an interesting footnote that, long after his death, we have people bearing signs that read, "Jews Beware! Stalin Will Soon Return!"

His reign of terror is remarkable in that he was able to slaughter so many while at the same time maintaining a public façade of "Uncle Joe," the merciful one. One can only speculate on what drove so paranoid a lunatic into the games he played with human lives and how he so coldly turned his back and partied during the starvation of his people. A horrifying example is the amusement with which he would dispose of wives and family members merely to "send a message" to his henchmen--and then killed them anyway.

I have read of Stalin before the fall of ... Read More
