41.The Wild Blue : The Men and Boys Who Flew the B-24s Over Germany by: Stephen E. Ambrose

Books : The Wild Blue : The Men and Boys Who Flew the B-24s Over Germany
One of the things I love about Ambrose's books is the personal history he brings to the subject. If you look at the bibliography of "The Wild Blue" you will notice that many of the sources are interviews he has done with many of the characters in the book, along with other primary source materials. What this does is brings a very personal style to the telling of these stories. Other so-called "oral histories" are bland and often read like a transcript. Ambrose brings other research to the stories so you can understand the context of the time they lived in. "The Wild Blue" is no exception to this.

Before he was a liberal Democratic senator from South Dakota and an anti-war candidate for president, George McGovern flew 35 combat missions over Europe in World War II. Of these ... Read More

Great story, it was hard to read at times. The brutality of the Chetchen terrorists is unthinkable, EVEN BY TALIBAN STANDARTS !!

The herorism of the Russian soldgers that went all out to save as many children as they could restored some of my faith in humanity.

Great book that is something we should all read because it will happen here sooner or later!!!

To many theories without backup evidence that help the author with his presentation. After Reading this book and the lack of follow up evidence. Then reading the 40 plus reviews. The U.S. Navy investigations are just a complete disagreement with this authors conclusions. There are just too many unproven theories or conclusions in this book.
The conditions surrounding the sinking of the submarine fit much better as an on-board accident. Their are so many possible scenarios as to what may have happen on board that were completely overlooked and immediately eliminated. The list of "Oh Know That Could Not Happen" is long.
Including an on board failure concurrent with or followed by:
Reactor shutdown?
Reactor failure?
Reactor coolant failure?
Emergency Battery failure?

You may think you know a fair amount about Russia, but think again: This book will open your eyes to things about that huge, fascinating country that you never even suspected.

Specifically, this gives you a long, deep, vastly detailed picture of Russian culture, from its founding as an amalgam between the original Slavic inhabitants and their conquerors, the Mongols under Genghis Khan; to the first effective uniting of the Russians under Tsar Ivan the Terrible; to Russia's first prolonged contact with the culture of the rest of Europe in the reign of Peter the Great.

Figes shows us how the Russian aristocracy took on European manners and mores in the 18th Century, even to the extent of being more comfortable speaking French than its own language; and how the country's native culture ... Read More

Save your money or go to the library. I was pulled in by the title too, but the author doesn't deliver. You can read the entire book and still not know any deed that Cy Oggins or his wife actually did in their service as "spies" for the Soviet Union.

The author seems detached from anything that approaches "being judgmental" about these two deciding to spy for Stalin - and you never find out why they did.

The only tisk tisking is saved not for Cy Oogins the spy but for his older brother who was (Gasp!) a Republican who actually ran for office and loved his country.

My opinion: The author got too close to Son of Cy the Spy and wound up writing a nice little book about his father the spy - who wasn't such a bad guy after all (except for the spying stuff)....nice gesture, disappointing ... Read More

That this book was hastened to press is evident from the numerous typos that occasionally blunder over into silly factual errors (Henry Truman, Kirgistan). The prose is also, while engaging, at times under-edited. Yet one wants to overlook these shortcomings, as Edward Lucas is an important and influential observer of things Russian, having served for several years as the Economist magazine's bureau chief in Moscow.

Drawing on this experience, Lucas recounts a decade of Russian domestic and foreign policy crises, arguing that Russia is a dangerous foe, bullying its neighbors, cornering natural resource markets, crushing internal dissent and defrauding foreign investors. "Repression at home is matched by aggression abroad," Lucas writes. "Russia is reverting to behavior last seen during the Soviet era," yet now it is ... Read More

47.The Heart of a Dog by: Mikhail Bulgakov, Richard Pipes

Books : The Heart of a Dog
I've read this book several times. It's a short read - it's also hysterical (in a cynical sort of way, beware). I was introduced to the works of Mikhail Bulgakov in the mid-90s, and, after devouring Master and Margarita, I just had to read this one.

I won't give away the plot - it's been described in mulitple other reviews. But the idea of a man-dog smoking a cigar and wearing suspenders always makes me laugh 'til I nearly pee. It's a great book. But you must have a dry sense of humor to fully appreciate it!!

Read this and then read other Bulgakov books. It is understandable why Soviet Russia would have banned him during his time. What a shame, as he was truly an incredibly gifted author!

49.The Winter Queen by: Boris Akunin
2003
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : The Winter Queen
Because The Winter Queen was written by a Russian writer and translated for the English speaking market, it should come as no surprise that it's different from the mysteries that are usually available to us. It's not exactly exotic, but like the novels of Dostoevsky, the story flows from a perspective somewhat unfamiliar.

Erast Fandorin is a young man forced to make his own way following the death of his once-wealthy father. Practical and realistic, he leaves college and sets out to build a career in law enforcement. Erast is intelligent and perceptive, and his soon-to-retire boss sends him off to do a bit of investigating. He quickly and enthusiastically immerses himself into a deeper well of danger than he ever anticipated. There are several candidates for Queen in this mystery, and the inexperienced Erast commits series of errors in identifying her ... Read More

Books : Blood Red Snow: The Memoirs of a German Soldier on the Eastern Front
Having just read this book, I have to say I'm not convinced of the reality of this author's claims. Supposedly 'purposely' not identifying his own unit was only the first hint that gave me the impression of a tall tale.

I could be wrong (hope I am), but I'm sadly not convinced by this one.
