Dr. Philip G. Ryken [...]

offers a profoundly simple and highly practicle approach to an ever increasing need for good christian arts in cafe, stage, gallery, musuem, church, and/or home. In an ever changing world where lines all blur from art, medicine, science, new media, and technology dare we consider a view from the unchanging great "I AM" as central to our being and Art itself?

The need and desire to create art has always existed in man regardless of age, faith, creed, or sex and regardless of utility/gestalt, sacred/profane, and/or symbolic/representational intent.

This book traces the very steps back to the first and greatest Artist: God. And it recalls the account of the first divine calling for man to Create art, not for the sake of art but ... Read More

Does art and culture have a place in the Christian life? How about sculpture, drama, music, singing, and dancing? "Every Christian is called upon to be an artist in sense......of his own life." The arts are valuable because it is created; it is the essence of God. We all have the gift of creativity.

Schaeffer goes into a deeper perspective on the diversity of art. When we are to judge it (judge we should), we are to judge it through a Christian world view. But to make sure, the artist should be judged as a whole. We need to care about the whole man, not just the soul; art is a part of that and the bible gives us these answers. "The Christian does not need to be threatened by fantasy or imagination." Schaeffer again doesn't fail to capture us with his words.

A couple of years ago I interviewed singer/composer/producer Charlie Peacock for an online magazine. He sent me a copy of this book, and since then I have read it through about five times. Turner's insight and vision for Christian artists of all disciplines is almost incomparable in the modern church. He backs up his assertions with any number of contextually accurate scriptural references, and provides more encouragement for the bored and searching artist than he does condemnation of the status quo in Christian-produced art (although there is plenty to condemn). I consider this book absolutely essential for every Christian musician, dancer, painter, poet or artist of any color. It will radically transform your vision for glorifying God if you take its message to heart.

Oriah's WHAT WE ACHE FOR: CREATIVITY AND THE UNFOLDING OF THE SOUL is a gift of support to creative people. The book resonates as a perfect complement to works by Julia Cameron (THE ARTIST'S WAY), Jan Phillips (MARRY YOUR MUSE), and Natalie Goldberg (WRITING DOWN THE BONES.) These visionary and generous creative women each provide an intimate view of personal creative process, often a solitary pursuit; together they instill a sense of community to honor a creative spirit that unites us. Regardless of the reader's particular artistic passion, the books provide nurturing on a holistic level -- even for the creation of one's path in life. ALL OF THESE BOOKS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Henri Nouwen introduces a new and life-changing idea: living losses Eucharistically. He starts by acknowledging that life is full of "dark" and "agonizing" losses: "It is a world of endless losses, and many, if not most, of our fellow human beings walk with faces downcast on the surface of this planet." We go through life mourning...just like the two disciples walking to Emmaus, ruminating on their loss of Jesus.

Nouwen says that must mourn for our losses. We must "shed tears over them and allow ourselves to grieve deeply," acknowledge "the painful truth of our brokenness," and "experience the abyss of our own life" where "everything is constantly shifting and changing." In doing this, we realize that we are not the only ones with losses: in fact, all of humanity is "moaning and groaning" with the pain ... Read More

I have tried time and again to pick up this book and read the text in sequence, but the full-page color plates of Pablo Amaringo's paintings always pull me away from the text and into the world of shamans, angels, devils, serpents, jungle cats, mermaids, and aliens. I've read a lot of the text, but usually I have done so in search of an explanation for the images in specific paintings.

My first ayahuasca experiences were under the guidance of Luis Eduardo Luna. His knowledge of plant lore, chemistry, shamanism, and human nature is awe-inspiring, and I do want to read his words, but the pull of Pablo Amaringo's images has been too strong for me to resist thus far. I'm glad to have this book on my shelf because whenever someone asks me about ayahuasca, I know that I can place this book in their hands and ... Read More
