author pursued two story lines and really did justice to neither. as an earlier review states, there was no real solution to the murder mystery. I learned quite a bit about Poe(he could have not invented a more tragic character than himself), but might have done so more easily by picking up a biography. Whether I would have done so is another story, so maybe Stashower achieved something here. still feel larson is more successful in weaving together two plots.

Good-natured true-mystery history of the men and women responsible for the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys series of juvenile fiction.

The "Stratemeyer Syndicate" was a group of ghostwriters who created the kids books based on titles and detailed outlines prepared by Edward Stratemeyer, for anywhere from $85 to $150 per book! This system lasted for over 40 years, until the small-town 19th century economics and the cult of Carolyn Keene meant the ending of the syndicate system. The main role of Carolyn Keene was then taken over by Harriet Adams, Stratemeyer's daughter, who had taken over the company upon his death, and kept it going and healthy into the 70s.

Poignantly enough, as Adams grew older, and her family aged and some passed away, she took on the persona of Keene and adopted ... Read More

...and it wasn't Wolfe who blinks first.

It is a new year in the brownstone and Archie Goodwin is hopeful that Nero Wolfe be inspired to start earning the yearly income needed to keep their unconventional and expensive household going. Little did he realize that their first client of the year just might tide them through the next twelve months in style. The woman who appeared requesting Wolfe's services had a most unusual assignment in mind, she wanted Wolfe to get the FBI to leave her alone. She had managed to annoy the FBI by sending out thousands of copies of a book critical of the Bureau to everyone she could think of, bringing what had been a rather obscure book to national attention.

At first Wolfe was reluctant to take on the task which he judged to be not just difficult but likely ... Read More

I received this book yesterday in the mail. Have had a hard time putting it down! It's full of all sorts of information about Sue and Kinsey in one handy place. A few photos and maps, too. There's even a good index!

I recommend this highly for anyone who reads Sue Grafton's books. I have read all of them to date and am anxiously waiting for "U".

If you are a Devotee of the legend/story/history/you-name-it of Sweeney Todd you should devour this book. Notice the capital "D". At times Mack gives us just a bit too much info, but then again it's all interesting. Of course, discourses on the general subject of cannibalism are a necessary part of the story. What's nice is that although it was published just before Johnny Depp added his interpretation for the benefit of the public at large, Mack touches on the story behind this latest film production...quoting Sondheim and Depp among others. A must-read starts on page 108 when the classic original story "The String of Pearls" is summarized.

In Hard-Boiled Sentimentality The Secret History of American Crime Stories, Leonard Cassuto tells us that "The serial killer and the domestic detective have evolved out of the history of hard-boiled fiction, and hard-boiled fiction has evolved out of its twentieth-century U.S. surroundings" (270), and his book covers that history through an examination of the very books themselves. Whether he discusses Sam Spade of The Maltese Falcon or the effects of the Cold War on the American psyche, Leonard Cassuto manages to cross effectively and with aplomb the (false) divide between scholarly writing and mainstream writing to craft a book that will appeal to both audiences and particularly to those drawn to the crime novel. As the reader closes this text, he has the urge to run to the nearest bookstore to buy at least - and probably ... Read More

I'm a huge Christie fan. This book takes a look at her books in order. It's a little collector guide and picture book of the first edition sleeves. It could be a little more edited or tightened up but it's a great book. I've read most of the Christie books but will re-read some of the information about the plots in this book. It's a great guide for any fan and it's priced reasonably too!

This book is a definite must for any fan of Patricia Cornwell as well as for anybody just starting to read her books. It gives you information for just about everyone (and every place) in all of her books in both the Kay Scarpetta series and the Andy Brazil series, as well as her non-fiction work about Jack the Ripper and Ruth Graham. But newcomers, beware. There are spoilers in this book (and it tells you that right from the start).

I've read all of her Scarpetta books, and still found information in this book that I either missed or just didn't pay attention to the first (or tenth) time that I read them. And there were also things in there that I had forgotten about. The information for the main characters is extremely detailed, and there is information about all of the one-book characters as well. There is ... Read More

20.The Man Who Saved Britain: A Personal Journey into the Disturbing World of James Bond by: Simon Winder

Simon Winder gives us Bond in context. The book covers the history of post-War Britain and highlights the disillusionment of the average Brit regarding the end of the glorious "British Empire". In the midst of these sentiments, Ian Fleming produced the novels that gave us James Bond - somewhat like a last gasp of the glory that was Britannia. The book is highly entertaining (sometimes even more than the original Bond books and films!) and hilarious. I found myself laughing on every page.
