At its best this book provides an interesting look at tea. On the downside, Okakura Kakuzo, gets several of his facts wrong by not proofreading. All the facts are corrected in a brilliant afterward by E. F. Bleiler. Also, Okakura, has several comparisons to the West and how Japan is different. This is to show his Japanese uniqueness and it borders on nihonjinron.
However, Okakura does make a clear connection between the consumption of tea and aesthetics. He explains the background of the tea ceremony and the Zen influence. It is interesting of how he first talks about Taoism and its relationship to Zen, which I knew about but haven't really read anything on it.
I like the chapter on the Tea House. It explains a lot of how the Japanese view the tea house experience. It starts with ... Read More

I have always loved Mark Twain since reading Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer as a kid. At one point I had even memorized "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" as a seventh-grader in Catholic school. Twain has always held a sentimental place close to my heart, so when our book club chose to read and discuss A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, I was all for it.

I had heard vaguely of Twain's atheist mindset and his antagonism toward religion in general. But until I read Connecticut Yankee, I had no idea how much irrational and unfounded antipathy Twain had for the Catholic Church in particular. The pervasive theme in Connecticut Yankee is that our modern enlightened world is far superior to that which went before and that the "bad old days" of slavery and oppression were ... Read More

The Tempest is rightly regarded as being one of the Bard's greatest works, containing some of his deepest thoughts on the nature of power and the relationship between rational man as controller of nature, and the animal man always to be at the mercy of the passions both of himself, others, and the world around him. In fact, this play could be thought of as representing Shakespeare's final and definitive statement on topics that he had explored throughout his cannon. But profound as the philosophy is, and despite the beauty of the poetry and the many magical elements contained within the play, the fact is that as far as the average attention lacking teenager is concerned, not a lot happens. This is why this Cambridge schools edition scores over most others. It is almost entirely activity focused, the expressed ... Read More

Third Edition

This would have been rated one notch higher if I had had it available while reading through the series. An avid fan would own this volume and follow along with the maps (curiously absent from the books and sorely missed by landlubbers such as myself).

Pair this with A Sea of Words: A Lexicon and Companion for Patrick O'Brian's Seafaring Tales on your reference shelf if you are a real O'Brian fan.

36.The Western Canon: The Books and School of the Ages by: Harold Bloom

I enjoyed Bloom's book because it succeeded in one of its chief aims: to inspire the reader to open or go back to the books he describes. His enthusiasm beams from every paragraph. He obviously loves literature, and this passion conveyed itself clearly to me, triggering like feelings.

However, his book also irritated me. I can overlook the constant use of his favorite words: "declined," "agon," "proleptic," and "exuberant." But the constant rantings about the "School of Resentment," which would be feminists, Marxists, Foucauldians, and multiculturalists who reduce literature to ideology, got on my nerves and struck me as its own brand of resentment. I wish Bloom would have stuffed it all into an appendix or saved it for a book I would not have had to purchase.

This book holds a special place in my life because it is the first book that I ever read by Louisa May Alcott. I suspect that I stole it from my grandmother's library. As the first, it was my favorite for a long long time-- particularly since it didn't make me cry buckets the way that Little Women) did (does). It left me with an enduring love for idea of little gifts from foreign lands-- one of the things that happened to Rose that just seemed to me so very wonderful.

Over time, this book has been a little bit eclipsed for me by the other Alcott works. Although I still enjoy reading Eight Cousins I have to admit to the occasional sigh of annoyance at how didactic Dr. Alec manages to be. It seems clear to me that Alcott was using this book to work out a lot of her notions about how to raise a child-- a common enough theme ... Read More
