Archaeology is not my field, but from the first page on, that did not seem to matter. Rosemary Joyce writes with both scholarly depth and engaging accessibility; I could hardly put the book down.

I especially appreciated her nuanced navigation of the field of gender studies, which sometimes can be more political than scholarly. That was not at all the case in Ancient Bodies, Ancient Lives. Joyce did what the best authors do: inspire me to read more in her field(s) -- and more of her work.

If you like history, Native Americans and feel that part of you would like to live in the past, and especially Florida, this is a wonderful read. You can feel the excitement of carving wood with ancient tools made by the author and sense what it is like to make arrowheads from the earth. Another hands on book of high regard is Walking the Trail by Cherokee author Jerry Ellis. He was the first person in modern history to walk the 900 mile route of the Cherokee Trail of Tears. Inspiring, compelling and hard driven, this spiritual book was nominated for a Pulitzer and National Book Award.

Books : Pre-Christian Ireland: From the First Settlers to the Early Celts (Ancient Peoples and Places)
This book is written by an expert in the field in Irish archeology and it should be read by anyone who wants to know the truth of pre-Christian Ireland. Harbison's descriptions of the ancient artifacts, the tombs, the gold, the jewelry, are excellent for the information he gives on early Irish life. The Irish Bronze Age is particularly interesting. Although maybe not written for a general reader it is a great book to have for accurate and informed reference. I highly recommend it.

27.From Black Land To Fifth Sun: The Science Of Sacred Sites (Helix books) by: Brian Fagan

Books : From Black Land To Fifth Sun: The Science Of Sacred Sites (Helix books)
What can archaeology tell us about the spiritual lives of people who, like the painters of Lascaux cave or the builders of Stonehenge, lived so long ago that only (or mostly) their nonlinguistic material remains - their stones and bones - are left for us to study? Brian Fagan's book is a fascinating exploration, for the general reader, of this highly interesting question. The author takes his readers on a personal tour of various sacred sites, and explains how current methods of scientific excavation and anthropological research can help interpret the cultural meaning of these places and the context of belief and ritual in which they operated. While much of their spiritual content is necessarily unrecoverable in detail - think of trying to understand a cathedral with no missals or Creed - there ... Read More

Kudos to David King for bringing us the fascinating, bizarre tale of Olof Rudbeck, who took Swedish patriotism to dizzying extremes. I must say, Rudbeck's theories, his reasoning and conclusions are strangely convincing, and King does a terrific job of laying them out for us. I couldn't help but think, however, that what would have been a few interesting chapters of a broader study on the many off-the-wall theories on Atlantis had been padded unnecessarily into a full-length book. It's a short book, certainly, but not one without its dry patches. The lengthy digressions into Swedish politics (as well as those at Rudbeck's university) can get a trifle boring. But when King sticks to Rudbeck's obsession with proving that Sweden was, among other things, what the ancient Greeks referred to as Atlantis ... Read More

29.Journey Through the Ice Age by: Paul G. Bahn, Jean Vertut

Books : Journey Through the Ice Age
I wasn't sure whether this book or "Prehistoric Art: The Symbolic Journey of Humankind" by Randall White would be better, so I bought them both.

It turns out that they are both excellent books. Both are loaded with color photographs of artifacts famous and less well-known. Both have scholarly, informative text, considering anthropological and historical contexts, the techniques and materials used by the artists, the history of the study of prehistoric art, and plenty of cautious speculation about the functions the art had to its artists' communities.

They are organized quite differently: Bahn's moves from topic to topic: chapter 7 is on portable art, chapter 8 on rock shelters and cave art, chapter 9 on outdoors art, and so on. But White's book has a regional arrangement: chapter 4 ... Read More

30.Echoes of the Ancient Skies: The Astronomy of Lost Civilizations by: E.C. Krupp

Books : Echoes of the Ancient Skies: The Astronomy of Lost Civilizations
The author visited and studied megalithic sites all over Europe, the Near East and North and South Americas. By careful measurement and observation he illustrates astronomical alignments built in to these sites. Black and white photos and drawings abound. This is a clear, thorough and extensive survey of archaeo-astronomy. He misses some alignments that later work has uncovered, such as the Venus alignment at Newgrange (Uriel's Machine by Knight and Lomas), but this book does justice to an interesting field. A must read for people interested in the civilizations of pre-history.
