The book is a string of quotes tied together with "he said", "he warned", "he asked", "he spoke of", etc. It reads like a 250+ page newspaper article, often leaving the reader wondering how this all ties together or what the author is trying to express. Comparisons with historians like McCullough, Ellis and Isaacson are misleading as the book fails to put forward new ideas or engulf the reader in events of the time. The book is a very cold and disjoint factual read.

I read the first few pages in the bookstore at the airport. I had to read more and ended up buying the book. I read almost the whole book thru out my flight. Very well written.

The story begins with Bill Buckley's first meeting with Ronald Reagan back in the early 1960s and how Reagan's approach to problem solving that night was a precursor to his style as President. The book then moves chronologically as Ron's accomplishments intersect with his relationship with Bill. They discuss governorships, Nixon, the 1976 election, the presidency, and its aftermath among other things. The story's construction is a mix of letters between Bill and Both Reagans and his commentary in between. Like Miles Gone By: A Literary Autobiography, it's a nontraditional memoir but an effective one just the same.

A common joke throughout the letters is how Bill and Nancy plan a rendezvous in Casablanca. Another continued story is Bill's telling President-elect Reagan that he wants ... Read More

I like Sen Biden. Always have. I voted for him for the democratic presidential nominee, but I guess I was the only one. Oh well.

The book however is way too long. It is written like he talks, it just goes on forever. I read the first few chapters then started skipping pages. He was generally still talking about the same thing several pages away so I am not sure that I missed anything. Eventually I got to the end and thought 'wow that was a good, touching, evocative story that could have been told in a long magazine article.' So that was a few nights of my life I will never get back, but all in all I feel like it was at least a good story and worth knowing.

Now that he is going to be VP I am glad I know a bit more about him. It gives me a bit more understanding. That ... Read More

AMAZING read! I have never been interested in History of any sort before and afte reading a bit about her on Wikipedia I couldn't wait to learn more! She is fascinating, flaws and all! This book gave a wonderful outline of the time period, the rulers in charge and the goverment, but loaded with interesting facts and how her life had impacted so much of that time period. It proved to me that times were not too different back then as they are now with sex, drugs, affairs, addictions and celebrity obsession. I couldn't put this book down and after finishing it you'll want to look for book on her fascinating friends and aquaintences as well! It's a must buy even for the uninterested in history, couldn't tell you the dates of the civil war type of person

37.Hopes and Dreams: The Story of Barack Obama November 03, 2008
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Hopes and Dreams: The Story of Barack Obama
I am currently reading "The Audacity of Hope" and ordered this one more as a coffee table book. I also ordered this one because my husband who is working 50 hours plus a week and going to school part time doesn't have time to read more on Obama that he would like to. This book is perfect for those who are short on time but would like to find out more about Obama. The pictures are wonderful and the story is just as good ... it is more of an outline than an actual book, but it's inspiring, full of tales, quotes and a lot of it can be found in "The Audacity of Hope," which does go in more details about Obama and his vision for the future.

There is also a brief autiobiography about Obama, his struggles as a teenager and as a young adult, campaigning all over the state of Illnois where often there ... Read More

Total agreement with all the five star reviews. Meacham presents history and biography on a grand scale, but creates a personal memoir of this historic friendship. One of those books the reader is anxious to get back to. I strongly recommend it.

I have never felt compelled to write a book review on Amazon, even though I read a ton of books. This book, however, I found to have opened my eyes, educated me in a way that only a first hand survivor could, such as Brigitte, and found it to be a must read for all Americans. I highly recommend you take the time to read this book. I believe our life as we know it depends on us understanding what really is going on around us and therefore we can see what is truly at stake, and what is probably the driving force behind Brigitte writing her books. She's lived it before and she sees it happening again in America and she is trying to get others in America to see what she sees through experience.

It is amazing to find this book and to read so many reviews on it. I first read it when I was 10 years old, forty three years ago to be exact, and I have never forgotten it. I remember as a child being unable to put the book down and the images of swimming the Lena River and tramping through the Gobi Desert have stayed with me all this time. I would need to read it again (with the benefit of the experience of long distance running and a unit in Russian History) to ascertain whether this book could lay claim to reasonable accuracy or whether the survival adventures recounted are impossible as one reviewer has claimed. The believability of the survival notwithstanding, this book makes a great read. That I have remembered it all these years is surely testament to its story telling impact and its endurance.
