It looked a lot prettier in those Gilbert Stuart and John Trumbull paintings. If there's an overall theme to Joseph Ellis's 2000 book "Founding Brothers", it's that the United States was tempered as much by internal conflict as by war with Great Britain.

Ellis's approach deals with the aftermath of the American Revolution, post-Constitution, in six drawn-out narratives exploring various facets of the often-feuding Founding Fathers. He begins with the most famous and deadly of them, when Aaron Burr, then a sitting vice president, killed Alexander Hamilton for expressing disapproval of Burr's character. It was a duel, agreed to by both men, but a strange way for Burr to uphold his honor.

Ellis's treatment feels weak. As a story-teller, he muddies the waters by flipping ... Read More

This is a great book, written by an intelligent person, who has been maligned by the Obama campaign and the liberal left media because they did not want the book read. Unfortunately, I believe Obama was elected because the people who love him so much don't read. They don't even want to read his birth certificate.

Ms. Berlinski has written an excellent biography of one of the 20th Century's most important and intriguing political figures. She focuses on five main themes: the struggles of Great Britain in the 1970's prior to her election; the Falklands' conflict; Thatcher's relationship with (male) politicians; the miner's strike and her political downfall. The author uses transcripts of interviews she conducted with former cabinet officials, advisors and political adversaries of Mrs. Thatcher. The book is also footnoted, so that the reader can get more information from the sources used.

Not only were there interviews with politicians and government officials, but there were also interviews with people affected by Mrs. Thatcher's policies. For example, the author interviews wealthy Britons in the banking ... Read More

This book has three parts. First, Alan Greenspan tells us about his background, schooling, associations, intellectual influences, and business career. Then he tells us about his public life, from unpaid campaign aide to Nixon in 68 to chairman of the Federal Reserve for 18 years, ending in 2006. Finally, he explains his economic thinking, and how he envisions the world through 2030.
The first part is lively. We see him as a young man playing the saxophone professionally in a big band before falling in love with math and later econometrics, while hanging out with people like Ayn Rand. Contrary to what the Times' critic is quoted as saying on the back cover, Alan Greenspan does not gossip. The people we meet in his autobiography are there for their influence on his thinking.
What stands out about his involvement ... Read More

An excellent biography on the most convertersial, and one of the most important, founding fathers. The book covers nearly every aspect of Hamilton's life and shows how brilliat he really was. It gives a fair and balanced view of the great man. Although Chernow uses some very difficult words, I would reccomend this to anyone.

Partly in an effort to better understand the presidential candidates in the 2008 election, I ordered this book on tape. Although it was a little tough getting through the technical military equipment descriptions (not having a military background myself}, it was great to hear it read by John McCain. When finished, I felt I had a much better insight into the man, his family and his service to this nation. There is no doubt in my mind he is a true American hero deserving of our respect and gratitude. Apparently, enough American voters decided they were willing to take their chances on someone else, that I will never know if John McCain would have stood by his principles as President. That saddens me, really, because McCain would have been in a unique position to "clean house" in Washington, D. C. with the help of a proven reformer at his side. ... Read More

One of my earliest memories, at about age 4, is looking over a sea of people at a 1968 Hubert Humphrey rally. My folks were good establishment democrats. They'd also been huge King followers, and had been to the March on Washington. His death was the seminal political event I heard as a young child. They'd been a fan of JFK, of course, but I curiously had heard little of RFK from them. I suspect his death, as it did for so many, sunk them into cynicism and resignation.

This book, then, was a revelation to me. Clarke's narrative moves along at breakneck pace mirroring RKF's ferocious but brief campaign. He brings the campaign to life, and what a ride it was. Though RFK is the central figure, the real story is America itself. He writes of RFK's ability to transcend multiple segments of the American populace----------minorities, ... Read More

Barack Obama in his own words.
This was helpful as a quick guide to see where he had stood, using exerpts from prior interviews.
It is the sort of thing you want to take with you when riding the train or bus. Nothing in depth.

It was a pleasure to read a true perspective of this founding father. This book made him more human than history has made him in the past. The author did a fantastic job in trying to explain why he was the way he was and painted a vivid description of the life and times. On the other hand, I have always found it interesting how he stayed gone most of the time during the revolution as well as many of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. I would love to read about those that stayed and fought knowing they could be hanged for treason.
