31.Man Who Was Thursday by: G. K. Chesterton
April 15, 1960
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Man Who Was Thursday
To this point in my life, I've now read three works by Chesterton: his epic poem The Ballad of the White Horse and his biography of Saint Thomas Aquinas. The Man Who Was Thursday is a completely different work from the abovementioned pair. It is subtitled "A Nightmare" and that's exactly how it reads.

Thursday starts out like a quirky spy/detective novel, but as the plot progresses, it becomes obvious that this is no typical pot-boiler. It is well to keep in mind when reading this book that Chesterton was a master of paradox--and Thursday is riddled with paradoxes. Indeed, the whole book is a paradox to some extent. In an interview recorded in a biography by Maisie Ward, Chesterton once summarized Thursday by saying: "In an ordinary detective tale the investigator discovers that ... Read More

This is not a specific review, but I'd like to merely point out that one of the many admirable qualities of Michael Connelly's writing is that he at least devises sensible names for his characters. One can easily imagine someone named Jerry Edgar or Norman Church or Rachel Walling or Sheehan or Rider, et al.

The hack writers, on the other hand, always burden the imagination with such painful names as . . . "Star ballerina turned private investigator Persephone Pudendum drew her poison-tipped hat pin and thrust it deeply into the evil Dr. Wolfsnout Smorgasbord . . . "

If you are new to the series, or are reading the series in order, the best time to read this book is immediately after Holiday in Death. The other reviews under this book complain about the re-issue because the rather short book had been published as part of an anthology. But the book is actually an continuation of Holiday in Death. If you have not read the anthology, pick it up. It continues the development of the relationship between Dallas and Roarke through their first holiday season. If you have read Holiday in Death and are unaware of the anthology, you will find yourself disappointed in how Dallas handled the rest of the holiday season which was started in that book. Midnight in Death picks up that thread very nicely and it finishes it out, including how Dallas finishes giving out her Christmas gifts. ... Read More

If this had been the first James Patterson I read, I would have definitely never picked up another. The idea that a writer can come and go at will, into the top secret meetings of the NYPD or be given admittance to a top secret multi-force operation in Atlantic City is incredible enough.

But when the most evil man on earth personally calls the protagonist and gives him the broadest clue possible of what he is going to do and our hero doesn't catch on, I couldn't believe it. I knew from the first words what would go down, and expected him to leap into action to protect his girlfriend and her son, get them into hiding. But no.

And that had to be the most lackluster romance ever. It could have been good, if written with the slightest skill.

Don't bother with this one...

Stalin has been spotted, or rather his ghost has been seen in the Chistye Prudy Metro Station. Has he come back to Moscow to haunt the underground? Hardly. But the powers that be want Arakdy Renko to investigate and when he arrives on the scene he does indeed find people who had seen old Joe in the flesh, well not the flesh exactly.

So why was Renko given the case? Was it because he was investigating a woman who may or may not have hired cops to kill her husband? Was it because he resents ex-black beret soldiers who are now cops, but don't have the chops for the job? Was it because he's not a team player or is it simply because he's the cop the bosses like the least? Maybe a combination of all of the above.

Renko suspects Nikolai Isakov and Marat Urman, two of these ex-Black Beret cops, are on the ... Read More

This is the first novel in the Harry Bosch series. While the novels could be read out of order, I would recommend starting with this one because if establishes the background of the main character. The title comes from Harry's experience as a tunnel rat when he served with the US Army in Vietnam. The case involves the death of someone who had been in his unit in Vietnam 20 years earlier. Harry ends up with the case, and there is more to it than meets the eye.

It is a well developed plot and a well developed character. Make my day. He had been disciplined for shooting an unarmed suspect in a previous case (the man was an evil serial killer, and Harry saved the state the cost of a trial). He tends to be a bit of a loose cannon, but he gets the job done.

There are a few surprises in the case. Some reviewers ... Read More

Books : The Lighthouse (Adam Dalgliesh Mystery Series #13)
I always admire top authors who give nods to their contemporaries. P. D. James in this book makes a quick references to THE NO. 1 LADIES' DETECTIVE AGENCY and a more subtle reference to Stilla Remington's autobiography A nice touch there. Yet another nice touch is the importance given to the two subordinates assisting Dagleish. I hope that we'll see more of them.A large portion of the book is devoted to the introduction of characters, both those involved in the investigation and those who are suspects. Those anxious to get into the mystery puzzle may be put off by the long introduction, but it definitely got me more involved in the story. I do recommend familiarizing oneself with P.D. James and Inspector Dagleish before reading this one, but those who are familiar with the author and the principle character should very much welcome this newest ... Read More

Once again, the obsessed and dour Icelandic detective, Inspector Erlendur, succeeds in solving a mystery by dogged determination. It begins with the discovery of a skeleton with a Soviet listening device attached at the bottom of a draining lake. Looking back on unsolved missing persons cases from many years before, they attempt to identify the victim.

The investigation provides traces of spying, the Cold War, the repressive nature of the East German regime and human sorrow and disillusionment. It harks back to a group of Icelandic students attending University in Leipzig, all socialists until confronted with the realities of the nature of Stalin-type Communism.

Meanwhile Erlendur has to face up to his own life: his lonely existence, his addict daughter, estranged son. Written in the stark style which characterized the previous novels ... Read More
