The author of "Clockers" and "Samaritan" has hit the ugly, dirty, life-filled streets of New York again with a murder to solve and all the skeletons in the closet of a cast of characters, from the murder victim's father to the head detectives, Yolonda and Matty. The street jargon, street food, and street life put the surbanite into neighborhoods they'd never see except on television or the big screen. Price's dialogue never wavers; his characters exist on many levels. This is a fast-paced police procedural with heart.

There was no greater fan when I began reading Cross' books. About six books ago, I had not only stopped reading his books - I had taken him off my excel list of good authors.

A friend passed this book onto me, so thought I would give it one more try. Big mistake. It consists of incomplete chapters, which merely ring up one victim after another, so they can promptly be dispatched by the primary killer or a friend, while Cross, et al, do essentially nothing.

There is no plot, no suspense, no intelligent thought. In the last "dramatic" (not) scene, they have "killed" the really bad guy, Cross' nemisis forever, only to have him jump up unharmed, wearing a bullet proof vest. Who could have ever guessed? Could he be saved for another book? Throw up!

His book, Cross ... Read More

Most mystery-genre series fall into two broad categories. In the first category the narratives are primarily focused the murder itself; in the second category the murder is an event in the lives of the recurring characters who are the are focus of the narratives. A book that falls into the second category is often has a gimmick: the crime solver owns a mystery book store or the detective has a wife who is psychic. The Ian Rutledge has a gimmick - the protagonist hears voices, or rather a voice, in his head. The voice even has a name, Hamish MacLeod.

Still with me?

Set in the golden age of English mysteries, the Ian Rutledge series features a detective recently returned from the horrors of World War I and suffering from a unique case of shell shock. Rutledge is haunted, figuratively, ... Read More

Great story, not as exciting as the first few, but it does keep you going. I have read all the Womens Murder Club and this one was my least favorite but I still loved it. I am getting high expectations. C'mon James Patterson give us some more of that great stuff!

I was looking foward to Elizabeth George's next work hoping to erase the shock of " With No One As Witness". I didn't even read " What Came Before He Shot Her". I must say I was disapointed with this book- not only was it difficult to understand but my favorite character was relegated to the sidelenes( Barbara Havers). I realize this is about Lynley's healing but .....Actually it didn't seem like a George novel at all. I too am ( for the first time) giving a George book away.

ok the VAMPIRE plot was so Un-convincing........
tiger and all that nonsense............
it just seemed like Patterson dint know how to followup ROSES are RED...he made up all this BULL_crap about VAMPIRED to keep us hooked............
anyways the vampires things arent well explained........
and as for the MASTERMIND suspense.........
well no matter how SMART the Killer is............
ALEX CROSS always is able to BRING THEM DOWN......
FOR GOD's Sake-- CRoss isnt a SUPERHERO.......
and what i dont like about PAtterson books are that the Killers seem so smart and careful throughout the book but near the ending of the book they suddenly turn out to be careless............
i mean it seriously is getting a bit tooo repetative now........
and though this book explains some ... Read More

8.The 5th Horseman by: James Patterson, Maxine Paetro
February 06, 2006
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : The 5th Horseman
Patterson and Paetro gave it away on the dust jacket blurb, "The Women's Murder Club faces an unspeakable horror in an irresistible hospital and courtroom thriller ...". The problem is, they weren't talking about one novel being two things at once. They were talking about two separate novellas that had nothing to do with one another being tossed into a blender and combined into a single novel.

The bad news first! The first story is a typical and seriously overused hospital plot - a series of inexplicable hospital deaths that ultimately and not particularly surprisingly come down to the runaway serial murderer roaming the halls of a creepy hospital. The other is an uninspired police procedural about the apprehension of a kinky serial killer who liked to kill young girls and dress them up a little after they were already ... Read More

such a GOOD read..............
maybe not so PAtterson-like but still a fine book...............

No one, no one has bothered to capture the catastrophe of Katrina in a fictional setting like Burke. His prose, as always, is beyond and above the mystery genre'. He constantly makes me stop and smile at his descriptions of both place and people. If only I could. There should be no cheap thrills in reading about the hurricane that nearly destroyed this great city, but Burke nearly pulls it off.
