Books : Desert solitaire: A season in the wilderness
I loved this book and stayed up nights under the desert stars reading Abbey's writting that brought the desert to life. His appreciation for the wilderness fueled by the reflection of civilization gives the narrative depth. His rants of gapers and the great industry of being civilized are often humerous but sometimes turn mean. This book made me laught, cry, think, and act. A great book to take along for a road trip if you plan to get lost and leave the car at the end of the road to see where your feet take you.

We went on a 2 week road trip across the country and used this book to look up national parks in the areas we were traveling to. It was fantastic! It has great graphics and overviews of hiking trails and what there is to do in the parks. It also includes phone numbers of campsites and hotels within the park (which comes in very useful when you are going to a lot of parks!). It was a great asset to our trip and we would recommend it to anyone who plans to visit national parks! However - while it includes amazing graphics (which the official parks guide does not), it does not include national monuments like the offical parks guide does.

This book is a great gift idea for someone who is a repeat visitor to Walt Disney World. It is not a general list of hidden mickeys, like hiddenmickeys.org, but is instead a game that you can play with others in your group.

Included are game rules for "Scavenger Hunt" and "non-Scavenger Hunt". Buy multiple books, and you can compare your Scavenger Hunt scores at the end of the day. You can also play non-Scavenger Hunt with your kids (or by yourself) while waiting in line. The book is easy to store in your pocket.

If you want to play Scavenger Hunt and don't have enough books, you can always purchase additional books (at full price, of course) in the parks.

I have to read this for a lame LBST class, but I'm trying to make the best of it. As far as I can tell, it is pretty well written, it's just a shame that I don't care. My teacher, however, gives it rave reviews. If you're just looking for something to read that's interesting. Search Dean Koonz or Greg Hurwitz. Unless you are actually into anthropology, then this book might be for you. And why I spent this much time reviewing a book I don't even care about...well...I guess I don't know. Hahaha

16.Lost Continent by: Bill Bryson

I am a fan of Bill Bryson. I simply loved his Short History of Nearly Everything and In a Sunburned Country. Just awesome stuff. Reread both several times. I liked several other of his travel books, as well.

But this...this is just...bad. I mean seriously bad. He makes fun of darned near everything from his youth from his family on, and not in a funny, teasing, but affectionate way like Gene Shepherd had the sense and talent to do, but in a really nasty and distateful way. And it's just not funny. Nasty satire can be a guilty pleasure...like the old National Lampoon magazine managed from time to time (remember the Teddy Kennedy Volkswagon ad?), but this stuff is just...bad and boring.

I guess Mr. Bryson is just not talented as I thought, and hoped, he was.

18.The Souls of Black Folk by: W. E. B. Du Bois

Books : The Souls of Black Folk
In 1903, two years after Booker T. Washington's autobiography, "Up from Slavery", W.E.B. Du Bois published "The Souls of Black Folk", a series of essays which today most consider a seminal work in African-American Sociology literature. Du Bois view of race relations in American at the dawn of the 20th century was clear, critical and deeply profound.

Throughout the fourteen chapters Du Bois uses a metaphor, the veil, with considerable deftness:
"...the Negro...born with a veil...gifted with second sight...double-consciousness, this sense of always looking at one's self through the eyes of others."

Du Bois shares his thoughts on Emancipation & the Post-Emancipation era, "...there was scarcely a white man in the South who did not honestly regard Emancipation as a crime ... Read More

Books : Travels with Charley (Mandarin Classic)
Travels with Charley is one of my favorite books and one of the few that I have read over and over again. I want here to especially recommend the Gary Sinise reading of the book for Classics on Cassette. Sinise has played and directed in productions of other Steinbeck works, and he reads the book in an engaging manner that I suspect reflects his own love for the book. I have listened to part of the Recorded Books version on CD and enjoyed it far less. I do hope the Gary Sinise version comes out on CD soon.
