This book was very informative without throwing in personal bias but just stating the facts. It reveals plenty of new material.

Excellent historical and informative expose on how the nation's highest court is undermining our basic liberties and freedoms. Mark Levin is a straight shooter who tells it like it is and explains legalese concepts that are difficult to understand.

33.Black Hawk Down: A Story Of Modern War by: Mark Bowden

Books : Black Hawk Down: A Story Of Modern War
Bowden has written a masterful account of the Black Hawk Down tragedy which became a famous Tony Scott movie. The scene is grim: Mogadishu under the warlords with an inept, incompetent United Nations force presuming that it will separate the warring factions and restore peace. The United States commits its troops to snatch a warlord and his cronies to cripple the terrorists gripping this impoverished nation and its capital. Political consideration such as the prohibition of armor takes precedence over protecting the troops. The October 1993 incident raises a lot of questions about elite units, vicious house to house fighting, the support that is possible or necessary to engage such terrorist forces, etc., In addition, there were reports that Osama bin Laden had urged (or some say even sent his underlings) ... The Long Descent is a Short Ascent

For several years, I have been seeking a guidebook to our immanent future of less oil and therefore less wealth. Of the over one dozen books that I've studied, Greer's is the clearest.

His synthesis of peak oil, the demise of previous empires and the mythological narratives that shape our thoughts succeeds because he gets past simple linear extrapolations from the present into the future. The Long Descent ascends out of the morass of narratives that either promise a glorious future or, a looming apocalypse.

This less a practical guide to the future than an illumination of a path through a potentially darker age ahead. Occasionally, I have been so impressed by a book that I buy a second copy to give away. This time I have ordered four copies ... Read More

35.The Informant: A True Story by: Kurt Eichenwald

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : The Informant: A True Story
Wow. If this book were a novel, I think it might be dismissed as implausible. Yet sadly, the account of the meteoric rise and staggering demise of an executive at one of America's largest companies is all too true. The twists and turns are incredible! Very, very well written and painstakingly researched.
If you are looking for a book for a hard to please fan of whodunits or suspense fiction, this will serve you well. I wish there were more than five stars!

36.Blowback: The Costs and Consequences of American Empire by: Chalmers Johnson

Books : Blowback: The Costs and Consequences of American Empire
I have not finished this book, but after reading the first 20 pages, I learned about the wars and other raids that the United States military were involved in.

For me, I've always questioned the use of our military and our negative look at other countries. This book explains a great deal about the gray areas we don't know about.

A very grim picture is painted of the world today along with the causes of our current crisis. The final chapters give us the hope that with major changes in the way we live, and treat our planet and each other we can make a difference and perhaps avoid some of the perils we now face.

Inconsistent little book here.

Dick Meyer starts out with what is basically a hundred or more pages of whining about American culture. He whines about peoples' attitudes and the press and politicians and what's on TV. It gets old quickly and it's ironic, because you're reading all of this whining in a book called "Why We Hate Us" and the temptation to say, "whining is why I hate us" and walk away from the book.

That would be too bad, because the book takes a turn somewhere about halfway through and Meyer starts making some really insightful points about American culture and how to lead your life in a way that will help you get beyond a lot of the nonsense of America's culture and to contribute to a better culture. I found myself dog-earring pages because of points that Meyer was making and finished the book ... Read More

This book came up while I was buying "Political Fictions" for a friend of mine, and I was worried I'd missed something, but actually it's every nonfiction book she's written up through 2003. I've savored every word of Didion's nonfiction since reading "Goodbye To All That" (the final essay of Slouching Toward Bethlehem) in a nonfiction class in college , and she's never let me down. It's not simply that Didion is one of our greatest writers, its that her style is so incisive and unforgettable because she works with only a whisper of the incredible effort and vision she creates, she undoes the reader with observations that don't appear to be observations - she makes her conclusions about culture, nature, and humanity the only conclusions, and she can devastate, over and over again, in a single sentence. It's crazy to think of all of the nonfiction ... Read More

40.Civil Action by: Jonathan Harr
1998-11
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Civil Action
I'm a law student who read the book for a Civil Procedure class. The book was a little longer than it needed to be perhaps, but it included a lot of great personalities and a compelling litigation story. Not courtroom drama, but the entire drama surrounding a huge suit from start to finish. It's an especially great look at a lot of the rules behind trials (that's why we read it for class) and yet still accessible for someone with no background in law. This author is quite good; one of my favorite books is also by him, The Lost Painting.
