The author has written a well thought out account of his experiences being employed with the CIA while stationed in the Middle East. Even though this book was written 5 years ago, it still translates well and is applicable for today's reader. I personally was shocked and dismayed to discover how our country's leaders are so embedded with the Saudi Royal Family. More importantly, I am dismayed to read how entrenched our leaders of today are entrenched with the Royal Family who has fueled and funded the very men and women who are trying to destroy our country. Mr. Baer does an outstanding job detailing how respected citizens, such as Colin Powell, are paid salaries associated with companies who are affiliated with the Royal Family; how the CIA missed vital clues to 9/11 and because of politics ... Orlov has written a thought-provoking book, predicting that the collapse of the United States will follow a path analogous to the collapse of the USSR. There are two unique and valuable aspects to the way Orlov approaches this idea. First, as a former Soviet citizen, he reminds the reader of how recent US history looks to the non-American. The alien view is startling and includes some obviously valid insights. I say "obviously valid" because I think anyone would agree with them, not because they are obvious to an ordinary American like me, who has never lived abroad. I say "some" obviously valid insights, because I disagree with much of what Orlov predicts. For example, it is not plausible to me that most Americans would become homeless in an economic meltdown - we would all pay some kind ... Read More

Books : Den of Thieves: Untold Story of Men Who Plundered Wall St & Chase Brought Down
James B. Stewart's magnificent book recounts a wide conspiracy by Wall Street investment bankers, who were already some of the most highly-paid individuals in the world, to use inside information to generate instant profits for themselves at tremendous cost to ordinary shareholders, American taxpayer, and the health and credibility of the American financial system. Such a book about such greedy malicious individuals can easily degenerate into a polemic but it is a credit to the author's brilliant research skills and clear nuanced writing as well as the challenging complexities of life that "Den of Thieves" is, more than financial journalism of the best kind and more than non-fiction at its most life-like, above all a tragic epic.

"Den of Thieves" is divided into two parts. The first part recounts the ... Read More

I picked this up, only to put it down after a few pages. The author's rather melodramatic approach made the story seem more like a cheap, badly-written novel than a nonfiction account. I just didn't see any sense that the author had 'connected' with the subject, and so I couldn't connect with it, either.

For a down-to-earth and bracing perspective on the current times and where we are going, Sharon Astyk's book is invaluable. We need people to talk us down from our various precipices as we face the need to negotiate ourselves down to a more present reality. I particularly liked the chapter on the "real" economy vs. the "formal" economy.

Excellent book, well researched and does a very good job of showing both sides. After reading some of the "anti" nuclear books you can tell that the science and research behind this book are head and shoulders above.

I would really love if this book was required reading for all our politicians and even high school students. We need the facts before we can make rational decisions. This book gives you the facts. After reading it you'll be left with one inescapable conclusion, nuclear power is the single best choice for power production in the world today.

Though I can't say I agree with everything John Stossel says in this book, he still manages to make you think and question what you believe is fact.
He writes in a very straightforward, fist-to-your-gut manner that makes this book a quick read or a fun book to flip though.
I highly recommend it to anyone who questions authority, distrusts the media and likes to research topics on their own!

Each holiday season, we often find ourselves giving to the Salvation Army, donating to a local homeless shelter or buying toys for impoverished children. But after the holiday season is finished, do you still continue to give? "Giving: How Each of Us Can Change the World" by Bill Clinton is an excellent guide for those who want to give more. And the book not only addresses all the means of giving but also WHY we should give with examples of many people who have changed and improved the lives of others through their efforts.

"Giving" shows the reader the many facets of contribution. For example, you may not have a lot of money to donate but you have extra time on your hands. Donating your time to help at a homeless shelter is a perfect example of how you can give back to your community. Four chapters are dedicated to the following methods ... Read More
