This makes an enjoyable companion/semi-sequel.

Having grown up in the NY metro area, I greatly found this book fascinating. I don't know if others would enjoy this as much. But I always appreciate stories that highlight the struggles to create the things we take for granted.

Everyone knows there was a time when there were no bridges and tunnels crossing the Hudson, and now there are. But who really thinks about the sacrifices and efforts that created those crossings? This book brings it home in a human way.

Who better than the lead federal prosecutor of the Blind Sheikh (mastermind of the 1993 WTC bombing) to explain to Americans that the criminal law will never defeat terrorism?

Mr. McCarthy's book delivers the goods on two levels: First, this is a gripping and highly entertaining story of sinister plots, dogged (though often ham-handed) police work, heroic informants and complex legal maneuvers, ending - the reader is happy to discover - in guilty verdicts and life sentences. Among other things, one gets to meet the quirky, the remarkable Emad Salem, a former Egyptian army officer and terrorist-hating Muslim (yes, there are such people) who puts his life on the line to infiltrate and destroy the Blind Sheikh's murderous operation. His story alone is worth the price of the book.

If you are in the firefighting profession, then I wouldn't hesitate to buy this book.

For me it was a good entertaining book but I didn't find that it was a page turner. I could easily go a few days without reading it and then read off a few chapters in one sitting.

This book doesn't buy into the hysteria of 9/11 conspiracy theories, and from what I've gathered reading the other reviews, most all of the bad reviews were from people who buy into that crap (in my humble opinion.).

It's a vey well researched and detailed book (maybe a little too much), but I do think that one will enjoy it if the topic seems interesting to you.

As the other review states, this book doesn't contain any new scholarship, however, King does an excellent and thorough job of recreating the period of American and New York history between the years 1880 and 1914. For those who have only a passing familiarity with the names Astor, Vanderbilt or Belmont, the fiction of Edith Wharton, and America's 19th century aristocracy, A SEASON OF SPLENDOR is a great starting place for research. Once you've consumed the bevy of names, fortunes and scandals this book entails, the bibliography is an even greater resource, since most of the books listed are available in your local library--though you may feel sated by King's unerring eye for detail. I highly recommend this book, as well as King's other works of social history.

Great story about the history of one of America's greatest firehouses. Whether you are a veteran firefighter, or just looking for some exciting true life stories, you will enjoy this book. It explains firefighting in terms anyone could follow, while weaving in stories of inspirational courage and brotherhood. Certainly it contained one of the more touching recounts of 9/11 that I, as a firefighter, have ever read.

Lessons in Disaster provides unique insights into Kennedy's decision making process and the possile outcome of our war effort if he had remained President.
Most importantly it provides valuable lessons to our President-elect as he sets a new direction for our country in global affairs.
This book is a must read as much for its historical value as for its relevance in today's world.

The Historical Atlas of New York City solved a huge problem for me. I'm writing a novel set partly in New York in 1864, and while I lived in the City in 1964, that's a hundred years too late for this novel! I live now where research facilities are slim, and I needed something to show me where people lived, shopped, worked, entertained themselves.

This book answered my questions. It showed me which landmark buildings were on which streets then and gave me the background for the characters who inhabit my novel and the City. It has prevented me from having a character walk past the Flatiron building, or attend a ball at the Waldorf-Astoria.

It also confirmed that elderly gentlemen probably played chess in Tompkins Square Park just as they did a hundred years later, and that the brownstones around Washington ... Read More

The Island at the Center of the World: The Epic Story of Dutch Manhattan and the Forgotten Colony that Shaped America

The real story of New York, the missing history of an American Colony. This fascinating book is loaded with hundreds of informing tidbits and references from how certain neighborhoods were developed, to the origins of names that are so familiar to us like Yonkers, The Bronx, Brooklyn, and so much more.
