The title of the book that am reading is A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Bettie Smith. The main topic of this book as it states in the foreword."The best anyone can say is that it is a story about what it means to be human." Represents that the novel about a little girl named Francie and her little brother named Neeley that wasn't just about how they pulled through in a poor neighborhood. It was about the real life struggles families have to go through.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is a novel. The author of this novel was born on December 15, 1896 with the name of Elisabeth Wehner. She married young with a law student from the university of Michigan. She then had 2 daughters named, Nancy and Mary. She wanted to finish her schooling but she didn't finish high school. Although she was able ... Read More

23.The Princess Bride by: William Goldman

I'm a reader, first and foremost, and in general, I prefer books to movies. In this case, I prefer the movie. I tried very hard to like this book. Very hard. And I honestly was able to make it through 8 chapters before throwing in the towel and considering it a lost cause.

Make no mistake; the writing was excellent, the humor quite dry and witty... but it wasn't what I'd thought I'd be reading. I picked it up thinking it would be a fun, action packed, fantasy adventure. What I read was the whining and moaning of a middle aged yuppie from the 80's interspersed with brief bursts of actual plot.

Satirical social commentary is all well and good; in fact, I generally enjoy it. However, in this case, I felt betrayed. I've watched 'The Princess Bride' 50 some odd ... Read More

24.The Sun Also Rises by: Ernest Hemingway

Books : The Sun Also Rises
"The Sun Also Rises" was required reading when I was in school (oh so many years ago) but little of the book stayed with me. On my recent second reading I now recall why this book is considered to be one of the greats.

Hemingway is a master story teller and this book includes some of the best character interaction I have ever read. The locations and plots lines are well handled, as are the insites into the issues and morals of post WWI Europe. What I forgot was how much I disliked almost all of the characters in the story. Every last one is shallow, weak, and flawed in major ways. Hemingway did a great job showing us the human side of his characters and still kept the book interesting.

Truely a master work of fiction - Highly recommended!

25.A Clockwork Orange by: Anthony Burgess
1992-06
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : A Clockwork Orange
This sentence from the second-to-last chapter of our modern Dante's journey through Hell sums up this book in many ways. Intellectually stimulating, violent, fun, beautiful, dark and open; you won't find a better dystopia.

The problems I tend to have with dark novels about possible futures are that the authors tend to be extremely proud of themselves, and this smugness can ruin a book--and also that the changes in society often seem too clever or silly for me to actually enjoy the story.

A Clockwork Orange, however, pleases the ear as much as it does the mind. Maybe this is because most of Burgess' new words are actually words stolen from other languages. Whatever the reason, this counter-culture comes off as eminently plausible; and one that embraces violence without condemning ... Read More

26.The Partly Cloudy Patriot from: Simon & Schuster Audio

That's the book I'm describing in my review title above, though it could apply to Sarah Vowell herself. This collection of essays is the best kind of historical musing; Sarah ties in the past with the present, and weaves her own biographical comedy around it all.

Not only is this book relatively brief, but the essays are as well, so if you're looking for a quick chuckle and an "I didn't know that!" before bedtime, keep The Partly Cloudy Patriot on your nightstand.

Also recommended: Assassination Vacation.

27.Animal Farm by: George Orwell

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Animal Farm
ANIMAL FARM is a very well written little satire that actually is quite hilarious in places. Scholars of the beginnings of the former USSR may enjoy dissecting the novel and figuring out who or what on the old "Manor Farm" Orwell meant to represent what reality in Russia. Happily, the rest of us can simply enjoy the cleverly drawn animal characters who exhibit many familiar human traits. This is a great book to teach that can spark many interesting discussions that touch on history, sociology, psychology and politics while showing students qualities of good literature. Many kids who think they won't like ANIMAL FARM end up being pleasantly surprised and not just because of the brevity of the text.

I read this book years ago and it has stayed with me ever since.
Originally published in 1931, it won the Pulitzer prize the following year.

The setting is in China, right before the revolution. Wang Lung is a poor farmer in a village and the book starts with his wedding to plain O-lan. They have four children together, three boys and one girl. He is a very hard working farmer and bit by bit, thanks also to O-lan's skills, he builds a fortune by buying land from the House of Hwangs's family, landowners in a nearest village whose wealth declines dramatically due to their relentless spending.

We are dipped into Chinese culture, taken from the seemingly bottomless poverty of the early days throughout the rise to wealth, only to be propelled downwards again due to a terrible draught and subsequent ... Read More

I recently re-read this book since my son has to read it for English class. Even though I knew the entire plot, I still couldn't put it down. It was just as fresh and exciting the second time around. The characters are so marvellous you can't help but want them to succeed. I remember that when I read it the first time, I told my mom that I would never be able to look at rabbits the same way again. She told me that the book was really about people. But now, after re-reading the book, I have to disagree. People aren't as likeable as these rabbits. They actually learn from their mistakes.
