Books : The Thirteen Clocks
Without question the best children's book of all time, and high on my list of books to own, regardless of age.

Books : ATLAS SHRUGGED (Highbridge Classics)
I'm torn with this one. I was disappointed that Eddie didn't get to go to the gully. I was disappointed that Dangy ended up with John, Hank would have made sense, Frisco even more but I didn't get the John thing. I agree with the basic meaning of the book although it enforced it too much. At times I couldn't stop reading, at others it was a struggle to keep going. Sometimes I think all I held onto was the love stories.....I can't be that shallow...can I? Overall I'm glad I read it

3.A Catcher in the Rye by: J. D. Salinger

Books : A Catcher in the Rye
This book explores various themes about growing up. It was interesting to note that most of the issues and themes explored still remain unchanged today. Given that the book was written in the 1950s, it shows the author's talent and insight.

The protaganist is Holden Caufield, a 16 year old high school boy, and it is written in the first person. I have heard that the book was on a "banned" list for some time due to the themes it touched on, and the language.

A very easy read, and I would highly recommend it.
The book is said to be a classic. The first person narrative works great.

4.The Great Gatsby by: F. Scott Fitzgerald

Books : The Great Gatsby
Another book from AP English that surprised me. Fitzgerald makes good writing seem easy. This work both critiqued and defined the American '20s.

5.Slaughterhouse Five by: Kurt Vonnegut
1999-06
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Slaughterhouse Five
Slaughterhouse five is one of those great anti-war books in the 60's that is really hard to describe, so I'll make it quick. It tells about Billy Pilgrim, who 'time travels' to many points of his life, including the bombing of Dresden. He also gets kidnapped by aliens and learns about their way of life. Embedded in the whacky, realistic narraration is a message about war and life itself. I can't say much about it except that it's a must-read before you die.

6.Mere Christianity by: C. S. Lewis, Michael York

Books : Mere Christianity
This book "Mere Christianity" By C.S. Lewis should be read by both Christians and non-Christians alike. Any book that brings you closer to Jesus is a beautiful thing and this book will do just that. I hope atheists and agnostics will read Lewis and question their way of thinking.
I see from reading the reviews on this site some people have recommend my book, "The Enlightenment, What God Told Me After One Million Prayers: A Message for Everyone," and again I just want them to know how much I appreciate their recommendation, especially at such a excellent site. I wrote this book out of love and for the glory of God and Jesus, not for my own fame or fortune. I welcome people to read my book, I'm sure you'll find this non-fiction account of a loving God just as positive and inspiring

Always heard about the man and the book but it was difficult trying to follow and understand. Gave up three quarters of the way through. Did learn a little something though.

8.To Kill a Mockingbird by: Harper Lee

Her voices for the various characters and her southern accent are enchanting. She was a pleasure to listen to. The story is told by Scout, the daughter of Atticus, an attorney defending a black man accused of rape. The story illustrates the ugliness of racial inequalities in the South which hurts. But it also shows human goodness with a decent ending.

While a good read with strong themes, I struggle to grasp why this book is considered such a "classic" by so many. I'll admit - I am no one to judge what a "classic" is, but it would be nice if someone could explain it to me - as there are other books out there that drive at similar points but are considered far less noteworthy.

That being said, there were some strong themes running through this book that seem very prophetic - the book was written in the 1950s, and I caught myself more than once drawing on Bradbury's "exaggerations" (at the time) to current society. Such as the mass media (or propaganda) and mind control - crippling people's ability to think for themselves - and in fact doing the "thinking" for them. This is a central theme and one of the reasons behind the burning of books - as books make you think ... Read More

10.The Hobbit by: J. R. R. Tolkien

Books : The Hobbit
I know it's heresy to give Tolkien anything less than a 5. He is the undisputed Lord and Master of the contemporary fantasy genre, from whom all subsequent attempts are somehow derivative. No one has since been able to write speculative fiction without owing Tolkien a great debt. But, while Middle Earth is certainly more complex than Hogwarts, those who sneered at JK Rowling's godawful prose stylings might want to take a look back at Tolkien's first novel.
