In THE OTHER, David Guterson tells the story of two high school students who meet at a long-distance track meet in 1972. Neil Countryman is blue-collar Irish and has aspirations of being a famous writer. John William Barry is a non-typical "rich boy" and the product of two of Seattle's most prominent families. The differences in their backgrounds, including the high school each attends, would make it nearly impossible for them to ever meet under normal circumstances. However, following their initial encounter, they strike up a conversation and at once are drawn to each other.

As they begin to talk and spend time together, Neil and John William learn that they share not only a love of literature but also an extreme affinity for the outdoors. As their friendship grows, they find ... Read More

I was expecting something better but all in all it was readable. It was a little more interesting than Zadie Smith's White Teeth which I couldn't even finish. It wasn't the kind of book that you can't put down and I wouldn't recommend it for a book club discussion as there are far better reads out there such as Glass Castle or The Other Boelyn Girl.

I recommended this book to my book club after reading about the author and her story (as well as the book's fabulous reviews). Only two of us finished it (and not because they liked it - they wanted to honor the author). Maybe it's the translation, but I'm very sorry to say I found the writing and the characters absolutely horrid. Please note: I stopped at page 70. Maybe it got better from there, but I just couldn't take it anymore.

From beginning to end, I found this book to be one of the most compelling stories I've ever read. Truman Capote reconstructs this true life story in a way only a master storyteller can. He weaves the plot together in sequential order, allowing the reader to experience the crime and its aftermath just as the Kansas community did. Further, his character development is utterly flawless. I found myself haunted by the book long after I closed its cover. This account demonstrates Capote's immense talent as a writer, and it is a must read for those wishing to become familiar with Capote and those who enjoy true crime accounts or engrossing non-fiction.

I bought this book while I was on vacation at the beach. It was exactly what I wanted! I found myself laughing out loud at Cannie and her dog Nifkin. If you want a fun summer read, this is it!

I enjoy "the classics" and have read most of Hemingways works. This isn't up to par of the others and I would skip it. I had to force myself to read it.

I prefer not to add to the elegant and thorough reviews of this book that were placed by other readers. Simply put-this is an enthralling, fascinating and thought provoking novel that places its readers squarely in the bare feet of Valentino Achak Deng, its protagonist. It does not stir up feelings of pity, but helps the reader to intimately understand and feel the struggle of the young Sudanese boy, and to realize that there is evil, pain and struggle everywhere, not just in Africa, but everywhere...even Atlanta...it shows that life is just a circle, and that it really does not matter how civilized a society thinks it is, in the end, we are all human beings capable of the worst characteristics and prepared to act unjustly against other human beings.

This is a book that explains human behaviour without teaching. ... Read More

There are tragedies flung at us by the gods such as hurricanes and earthquakes. Then there are those tragedies visited upon us by ourselves. This is a tale of the latter.
In dark and gorgeous language Barry tells the story of an old woman, Roseanne McNulty. From childhood Roseanne was set on a path that inexorably led her to stray outside the strict conventions of 1940s Ireland. Unwittingly, she becomes the victim of a merciless society bent on rigid conformity and determined to exact its revenge on those who flout its dictates. For those whose picture of Ireland in the "old days" is one of rose-covered thatched cottages, the revelation that so much pain resided behind the walls of many of those dwellings may come as an unpleasant surprise. But those of us who have lived in Ireland and particularly have witnessed its ... Read More

If you are a new reader of Picoult I don't think this will be the book that hooks you. If you are searching to buy a Picoult book I would strongly suggest My Sister's Keeper. While The Pact was interesting at time I felt some aspects were a bit slow moving. Hope this helps.

When I started this book I was immediately drawn into the story. I initially thought this was going to be a very good read but not too long into it I began to see it's faults. The story was unbelievable the character of Nicholas needed a good kick in the behind in my opinion. He was way to controlling with the entire world centering on his life and his needs. I thought this should have been addressed. He seemed to get away with being a totally self-centered, selfish person and I don't feel like Jodi ever brought this up or made reference to how he needed to grow up and get real. I did appreciate Paige's growth but all in all, the book was way too long and I couldn't wait till it was over. In fact, I found myself trying to skip ahead to just get it over with. Usually Jodi has a twist at the end or something to look forward to ... Read More
