The only reason this book deserves one star is that something interesting actually happened, albeit AT THE END OF THE FRIGGIN' BOOK!
I swear watching Teletubbies or mold grow in your shower is more interesting than this book.I could not get through half of it.
Nothing even goes on until the very end.By then though, you have given up as did I.
I agree that the book has a good plot but, how the plot is written is an entirely different story. One reviewer on here said that it sounded like it was written by a fifth grader.I wholeheartedly agree.I will never pick up this book again.

Read it on the Kindle, only bought it because it was the first book on the Kindle bestseller list that I'd had any previous interest in. Bought it more to figure out how to use the Kindle than for any other reason. It is fantastic. The oddness of it - the fact that is is so clearly inspired by the life of a famous and famously private person, and yet is clearly fiction - never goes away, and indeed composes part of its strangely compelling quality. The book is often unseemly, not just in its many depictions of sex and other bodily intimacies, but in the sense of intrusion that comes with them. But what cannot be denied is the prose, the sense of place, the creation both of a fully realized fictional character and of a plausible psychological portrait of someone who is in front of us nearly ever ... How can I relate how much I loved this book? The love story between Clare and Henry is simply hauntingly beautiful. I sat in an airplane reading it and it made me cry. The author writes each segment, each meeting between the characters with a stark honesty. I related to both characters and felt both of their joys and pains. It's an amazing story-telling experience and it's written in a witty and non-expected way. I just loved it. A pleasure to read...I just wish I found it earlier.

36.Guns,Germs, and Steel by: Jared Diamond

I've seen so many critiques and reviews on the internet, from scholars and professional reviewers, that seem like they haven't even read the book. For almost every critique that can be raised, Jared Daimond addresses it in his book already. If you will just read the book yourself, in its entirety, you will see what I mean. This book and the broad explanations he puts forward are pretty much beyond reproach, not least because of their broad scope.

Many criticisms can be refuted because the book focuses on the broadest patterns of history, taken over timespans of several hundred years or more.

Another essential point to keep in mind before critiquing is that Daimond distinguishes between proximate and ultimate factors, and raises this distinction repeatedly throughout the book. So before raising a criticism, stop ... Read More

OK. I've got to begin by saying I'm an unashamed dog lover. So the combination of another book by Dean Koontz and this one about dogs seemed like something too good to miss.
The book began great. Amy Redwing got me onboard right from the start and as the pages turned I became more engrossed in this tale of dog rescue and mystery. The writing is, as usual from this great author, fantastic. The storyline very engaging. I couldn't put the book down once I got started, but what happened to the finish? Get to page 450 and it seems like Mr Koontz just wanted to finish the book in double quick time. After all the build up, the tension, the intertwined storylines and characters...it all just abruptly ends! What happened?
A good book, but could have been better.

This is a terrific book. It took me a while to get into it -- approximately 100 pages or so -- but I'm stubborn and I like to finish a book that seems to have merit. Once I got past the first section, which sets up the "story" (I use the term loosely, as the novel isn't particularly plot-driven), I loved it. I'm really looking forward to starting 2666. Highly recommended.

It was difficult to decide what was more disappointing: the poor narrative or the incredibly poor knowledge of the history in general, and of the region Ms. Brooks writes about in her "People of the Book". Since a lot has been said about the former in other reviews, I will comment on the latter.

On p. 67 you will find a hilarious sentence ending with "...,yet following the forms of Petrarchan sonnets that had been carried inland from Diocletian's court on the Dalmatian coast." Diocletian retired to his palace on Dalmatian coast in 305 A.D. and died there in 311 A.D. Following his death, the palace was used as an administrative center and the governor's residence until, in 615, it became a refuge for the residents of Salona when their city was sacked by the Avars. In other words, there has been no "court" after Diocletion's death. And Petrarch... ... Read More

It's a wonderful and heartwarming story of a farmer who was once a Vietnam vet and had his heart broken by the death of two previous dogs he'd owned, a gentle wife and sweet son who know him better than he does himself, and the perfect dog. There isn't an earthshaking message in this story, but if you love dogs as much as I do--especially since the dog on the cover looks very much like a somebody I love dearly--you will laugh and smile at Greg Kinkaid's wonderful, conscience arousing story. Like people, dogs need love and value too. The idea of getting an entire community to empty out a run-down shelter for the holidays and perhaps permanently placing these animals in homes is a wonderful concept.

Told with heart and humor, this is a wonderful little novel that doesn't take long to finish and stays with you long after you close the cover. Buy this ... Read More
