This is by no means an "easy read" as in silly chick lit...this novel deals with tough issues. However, you breeze through it because you fall in love with the characters. I finished this book in 3 days. EXCELLENT!

Why is this a so-called "classic"? Got me. I have no idea. Another reviewer said that you could skip chapters and not miss anything. I agree. I first attempted this novel a few years ago. I quit in less than 50 pages, so bored was I. I picked it up again recently, and I'm now less than 50 pages from finishing. What an unfulfilling reading experience this is. There is no central unifying theme or plot - other than that war is hell and the military rarely makes sense. But we knew that, right? As for the whole catch-22 business, sure, that is amusing the first twenty times, but it gets old quickly. This story could have been told in 50 pages and even that would have been too much.

Why then, if it is so bad, am I about to finish it? You know how it is. You start reading, and you become ... Read More

It is no accident that the author of this novel is a faculty member of the Iowa Writers' Workshop. America America is interesting in structure and style.

There are three elliptical story lines. All are narrated by Corey Sifter, a native of a small town in Western New York. One ellipse deals with Corey's working class youth in the early 1970s and his gradual absorption as family retainer to the Metareys, the local gentry. The second ellipse concerns Corey's adolescence and young adulthood as he breaks away from his small town roots. The third, set in 2006, involves Corey's adult life as a newspaper publisher resettled in his old hometown, reflecting on events of the past. The points at which these three ellipses intersect form the center of the story: the rise and the mystery surrounding ... Read More

The reviews here vary hugely between 1 to 5 - maybe that's because Anne Enright is a thought-provoking writer who is capable of generating a strong emotional response...I read the novel while travelling and found something in the narrative that went comfortably with my roaming state of mind - On the road, you tend to have time and quiet to look back and remember. In the novel, there is an important journey taking place in the mind of Veronica, the main character, and it is a journey that is raw and profound. Yes, it is a sad book. So sad it kicks you in the gut. But Enright has enough wit to make her characters lively and sometimes even funny. It is ultimately uplifting and true. If you are not afraid of a difficult story well told, read 'The Gathering'!

Wonderfully written...powerfully gripping...100% the best of Steinbeck. I have only recently started reading the "classics" and this was the best by far. After finishing "The Grapes of Wrath," "Of Mice and Men" and now reading "East of Eden," I have to say that Steinbeck is arguably the best American lit writer ever published.

Before I begin my criticisms, I will mention that my focus of this review is not on my personal preferences regarding characterizations, settings, themes, authors, etc. I understand that I cannot expect all authors to write a story that I personally enjoy and can relate to. Even if the subject matter of Of Mice and Men had interested me, I still would have given the novel a one star rating because of my criticism that I will explain in this review.

I am giving this novel a one star rating because it has a lot of vulgar dialogue. There is an average of about 4 profanities per page.

Secondly, even if I were to set aside my moral views of this novel, I still would choose to give this novel a one star rating. In my opinion, the plot structure is not all that good. The climax and resolution ... Read More

As a huge Picoult reader/fan, I was a little dissapointed in this book. Although the twists and the plot was interesting, I for some reason couldn't connect with the characters in a way that I usually can when reading a Picoult novel.

I was surprised when I saw that alot of people couldn't put it down, because I found myself easily distracted while reading it. It was almost a struggle to finish.

Some may disagree on this, but I feel like June and Claire's characters were not as defined as most characters Jodi creates. I never really felt June's pain throughout the story. I think if I had, I would have liked the book much more.

Though I was somewhat dissapointed, Picoult is still my favorite author and I would recommend her books to anyone and everyone. I just wouldn't recommend starting ... Read More

I liked this book. I would laugh and cry reading it, the movie is good, too. Haly Berry is in the movie and I love her movies. You cannot not go wrong getting both the book or seeing the movie.

This was my first foray into McEwan's work and I am glad to report that this novel was absolutely striking. It had many elements I did not expect but the prose was consistently vivid. There aren't many events in the novel (indeed, not much happens at all) but we are transported back throughout the year before the novel's present. This is done in a concise way that is maximized by the quality of the description. I found the novel to be a perfect length for what it was attempting to achieve.
