Any new Rumpole book will always be welcome on my shelf, but this is a weak entry. We can forgive Mortimer (in his mid-80s) for running out of steam, but this is really more of a novella than a full-length book. (It's printed in almost large-print type, and takes just a couple hours to read.) It's somewhat of a continuation of his last book, with Hilda keeping up her relationship with the Mad Bull, and considering becoming a lawyer herself. Rumpole of course defends a Timson, and as usual is involved in cases related to current headlines (global warming and human smuggling). I can't really complain: he's always fun to read, but I guess I just wanted a bigger helping.

I had never heard of Tess Gerritsen prior to Amazon offering a free Kindle download of "The Surgeon." It sounded interesting, so I gave it a try. I'm so glad I did!

As another reviewer stated, it was similar to the style of "Silence of the Lambs" or "Hannibal." Each of the main characters are fully fleshed out, and their individual personalities are very distinct. I found myself empathizing with Detective Moore, disliking (at least initially) Jane Rizzoli, and fearing for Dr. Cordell.

The medical terminology was over my head a few times, but it lends credence to the scenes in the ER. The author effectively places you in the midst of all the action, and you sometimes forget you're reading a book.

There aren't many books that I have difficulty putting down, but ... Read More

My husband and I had a long road trip ahead of us and decided to listen to Judge and Jury on CD - Unabridged. The reader/actor Joe Mantega did a great job of playing out all the parts and making the story so believable.

The story was well constructed and in many places kept us on the edge of our seats. A little predictable but all and all it was very entertaining.

I don't think I've ever disliked a villian more than I did Dominic Cavello - he was just plain nasty.

I highly recommend the CD's for a great listen, especially for a long road trip. It certainly made time fly for us!

14.The Alibi by: Sandra Brown
1999
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : The Alibi
The Lion's Game is a great, but long read with a double narrative. At first, I was concerned about whether or not I would get lost in this approach, but DeMille took careful steps to avoid a spaghetti bowl of words.

The Lion's Game follows former NYC Det. John Corey, now a member of an elite anti-terrorist unit for the government. Don't worry, he's still the same old Corey, only this time his showdown is with a meaner than a snake terrorist from Lybia.

Although I enjoyed The Lions' Game, I did have a problem with the inability for some characters to see what the Lion's game was all about. Key things happen and are revealed to the task force that should have made them go "Oh yeah! That's what he is up to!" Because of my love for the character John Corey, I wrote off his inability ... I read this book with the usual anticipation I have for this author. The ending, however, threw me for a loop. I was quite disappointed in this "artsy" ending.

16.Body of Evidence (Kay Scarpetta) by: Patricia Cornwell

Books : Body of Evidence (Kay Scarpetta)
I haven't read a great deal of Patricia Cornwell, despite the fact that she is arguably the most successful crime writer alive in terms of sales. BODY OF EVIDENCE is the second Kay Scarpetta novel, written all the way back in 1991. I thought it was just an okay read.

Seventeen years ago, BODY OF EVIDENCE was probably considered quite cutting edge for its time. In this book, Kay Scarpetta is a chief medical examiner who utilizes a great deal of forensic science to discover the identity of a serial killer. Before shows like CSI, this type of plotline was probably a breath of fresh air.

BODY OF EVIDENCE holds up okay, but it ultimately resembles an episode of a rather forgettable forensic TV series. The murder plot is decently constructed, although way too convoluted for my tastes. ... Read More

Gripando has created a page turner that will grip you from the opening line to the final chapter in this legal thriller.

Jack Swyteck, criminal defense attorney, is sucked into his most dangerous, convoluted case yet. A Greek is thrown off a roof in Cyprus, his wife is raped - and thirty years later it leads to the Vice President of the United States dying while hunting alligators in the Florida Everglades.

Overnight Jack's dad, retired Florida Governor Harry Swyteck, is thrust into the limelight as the leading candidate for the VP vacancy. Jack is tapped to be his dad's lead attorney to shepherd him through the confirmation process - only to be fired six hours later. And people keep on dying.

Gripando does a wonderful job of keeping the reader guessing about what's really going ... Read More

An excellent read, you're a couple hundred pages in and fascinated but still not sure whether you like the protagonist or not, much less where justice could be found. I've read 30+ authors (hundreds of books Clancy and Brown to Griffith and Brown to Rankin and White to Connelly and Ludlum, to McCarry and McKinty and Pelecanos....), most of them their entire work, and never read DeMille. It is great to find a new (old) one who has been prolific. Other reviews will give a flavor of the book, my purpose here is to offer up some names which if you recognize and enjoy them as I have, may help you determine if my taste in books might be beneficial in your search.

I'm an author that writes romantic suspense, and I can tell you that I am never disappointed by Gerristsen. Her characters are well developed, and she keeps me turning the pages. I read for enjoyment and Tess fills the bill. I love the way she has slowly developed her heroine Rizzoli. Each novel gives you a new insight into her character. If you like thrillers, you'll love this one. I keep trying to put out the light, but end up staying awake until the laast page is turned.

We all know that to make a good joke, you've got to exaggerate the right elements while ignoring what isn't funny. John Grisham creates a slapstick winner with a book about a bumbling young lawyer who isn't going to Wall Street . . . in fact, he has to declare bankruptcy before he passes the bar exam.

But don't confuse this book with a humorous book about the law. This novel would have to be toned down by about 60 degrees before that would be possible. This is a comic book version of a funny story about "what if" a law student didn't have a job, any money, or any connections after three years of torts and briefs.

Rudy Baylor is dragged by his professor to a meeting of senior citizens to give out free advice. He meets the meeting's hostess who wants to change her will to favor a television evangelist with her millions. ... Read More
