As the author states in his book, revolutions don't always have to be progressive in nature, they can also be regressive and in some of the revolutions, there are both progressive and regressive trends. As we learn in the Iranian Revolution, the trend was regressive. A second center of power toppled the first center of power because they became worried about their power and resources. The first center of power was the royal dynasty (Pahlavi) where a weak willed dictator did not want to risk the loss of life to save his throne. The American government (under another weak willed leader Carter) chastised the Shah for any loss of life. Meanwhile, a faction of the clergy turned the tables on the Shah and their other competitors and seized power. The result was a more totalitarian government ... Read More

Pipe's is unfairly maligned in the mainstream media as a racist. Anyone who reads this book will find that his lucid explanation contains great respect for Muslims and the religion of Islam. He does not, however, hold any punches when dealing with militant Islam and the threat it poses to the civilized world. The reader might be surprised to learn that Pipe's disagrees with Sam Huntington's "Clash of Civilizations" argument. Instead he aligns himself with the notion that the Muslim world is engaged in a great civil war. Or, as Saudi Ambassador Faisal al-Turki once noted, a war "for civilization."
This book deftly underscores the insidious nature of militant Islam, especially at home in the US, but should not be approached by the basic reader of the Middle East. One who has not been exposed ... Read More

With "In the Path of Hizbullah," Ahmad Nizar Hamzeh has produced one of the most detailed and in-depth accounts of what is quite possibly the most powerful force in Lebanon today. Hamzeh forgoes the history surrounding Hezbollah's formation and immediately dives into the mechanics of the group. What you'll find here is an up-close look at how Hezbollah operates and how it is organized.

Hamzeh's main thesis states that Hezbollah's goal of establishing on Islamic order in Lebanon has not changed from the group's inception. What has changed however, are the methods employed by the group to achieve this goal. Hamzeh shows that when conditions are favorable, the group will employ more militant methods. This was the case during the relative chaos of the 80s. When militant methods become ineffective, ... Read More

Although this book is not an easy read it is well worth the effort. It explains the Shia concept of justice ( putting everything in its proper place) by reviewing a letter written by Imam Ali to his deputy in Egypt.
This section should be required reading for everyone in a leadership position.
I have yet to read the section on Remebrance( calling God to mind) but I am sure it will be equally uplifting.

The usual bias of history writers is to focus on violent conflicts, while glossing over many less exciting developments in the quality of everyday life. Karabell tries to counter this, and to give at least equal time to the more normal periods of peace, tolleration, or creative cooperation between the three religions of the book.

Assuming the reader has a rough idea of Christian and Jewish history, Karabell focuses on the evolution of Muslim relations with Jews and Christians. He also centers on the Near East-Mediterranean zone where the three religions have mixed together longest. This basically leaves out the history of Islam eastwards of Iraq.

The book highlights many cases of mutual influence and learning between the three religions. It shows how their relations have usually involved shared benefits, ... Read More
